I was thinking of moving there in the summer so I could go to Cards games and get a job at one of the casinos on the outskirts of the City. I was offered a few opportunities but I need to know about East St. Louis. I was looking on net and can get a one bedroom for $450 a month and the photos did not look bad and the street looked ok. I am from Newark so I would think East St Louis would be heaven.

I need help here.

Thanks

Spend as little as 10 days in St. Louis in the summertime and you will want out fast.

Perhaps the hottest place in the country and a town ridden with crime and terrible roads.

Considering cities over 1,000,000 in population, St. Louis would make my top five list for not moving to.

Two pluses are the NHL and MLB, as well as the casinos..........and one visit apiece to the zoo and the arch. After that, have fun staying cool and avoinding being robbed.

East St. Louis is one of the most crime-ridden cities in the United States. According to FBI's data of 2005, its murder rate hit 63.4 per population of 100,000, surpassing that of murder-infamous cities such as, Gary, Indiana (56.4 per pop. 100,000), New Orleans, Louisiana (54.5, 2004 data due to unavailability of 2005 data), Opa Locka, Florida (51.0) Richmond, Virginia (42.5), Baltimore, Maryland (41.3), Camden, New Jersey (41.3), Detroit, Michigan (37.2), and Washington, D.C. (34.1), as well as that of its neighbor St. Louis (37.6). Compton, California had a higher rate at (67.1). Their data also showed East St. Louis' very high rape rate, which exceeded 300 per pop. 100,000.
East Saint Louis and Opa Locka, Florida are generally considered to have the highest crime rates in the United States (Opa Locka had the absolute highest crime rate in 2003 and 2004 for cities of any population.)
The following table shows East St. Louis' crime rate in 6 crimes that Morgan Quitno uses for their calculation for "America's most dangerous cities" ranking, in comparison to the national average.
<dl><dd>[4]Year: 2005 number of crimes per 100,000.</dd></dl> <table class="wikitable"><tbody><tr> <th>Crime</th> <th>East Saint Louis</th> <th>National Average</th> </tr> <tr> <td>Murder</td> <td>63.4</td> <td>6.9</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Rape</td> <td>342.4</td> <td>32.2</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Robbery</td> <td>954.3</td> <td>195.4</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Assault</td> <td>6,489.8</td> <td>340.1</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Burglary</td> <td>2,520.4</td> <td>814.5</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Automobile Theft</td> <td>2,000.5</td> <td>526.5</td></tr></tbody></table>

*** Looks like Opa Locka, Florida could be a good place to be a snowbird and rent a cheap apartment during the winter months.

1)East St Louis is in Illinois
2)There are MANY better places in the immediate area to live, i.e. collinsville, Cahokia on the illinois side, numerous others on the missiouri side
3)St Louis is a very nice place, but like ANY major city, the slum is a place to be avoided.

My mom works with a lady whose husband was travelling to St. Louis on a business trip. He got lost and ended up in the wrong area, they found him shot dead on the side of the road. His car turned up a week later, the killers were never found.

The Casinos on the Missouri side are much better than the ones in East St Louis. I never won a dime on the Il. side but have hit some good jackpots on the MO. side.

ok i have been really busy lately but i had to respond to this thread being from stl...

ok first DO NOT move to east st. louis.(its in Ill, basically there is no reason to go to Ill unless u want to hit up the stripe clubs) u said $450/month for a place on the east... for 450 u could easily get some decent 1br right outside of downtown st. louis (check out an area called soluard by the brewery)... now as far as st. louis itself yea its just like any other major metro area IMO (clubs, nightlife, sports, restuarants, and a added bonus of casinos, the new one downtown is going to be exteremly nice, vegas nice) and i have been just about everywhere.

the only cities that are worth bragging about either have oceans i.e. miami, socal, fl cities or have world class dining or clubs i.e. new york or las vegas and maybe chicago. IMO all the cities besides the previous mentioned are the same, with nothing that u would miss in any other major metro area in the US.

Collinsville.Il.is nice..good resturants...nice cigar bar in the one I remember

for me the Illinois casinos are much better...

I take the tram over to "the landings" in St Lo....nice bars, resturants, brewery and great to people watch...

it's a small version of Rush Street in Chgo..

don't stray to far though...rough hoods over there...

you can take the tram...almost anywhere to safe places...

Being I live in Chgo it's only a few hours drive ...so a bunch of us take a road trip down there once a yr...

nice place to visit...

WWK in the house! You still banging that grocery checker? When are we getting a picture?

JJ, you don't want to move to ESL, you would be jealous of 98% of the populace. That wouldn't be good for your self confidence, even with that sweet unit you have.

Wow. Sounds like an outtake from the first vacation movie. I always assumed the slum scene in there was supposed to be set in ESL.
