I'm approaching that point. I don't trust the Honda dealer, they wanted to re-balance tires at 10K.

What really needs to be done.... recharge the flux capacitor, or something ?

Rear differential fluid has already been changed on a weird almost recall ( service bulletin, whatever that is )deal for free.

If I take it in, I fear they will do unneeded SHIT for $600 ( or whatever)! Am I right ?

Are there one or two key things to do ? I'm not a mechanic, more a construction worker by trade.

All makes are different but 30k is mostly just fluids and system checks. 60k is the big one which includes tranny flush and timing belts and breaks.

I agree the interval service checks are mostly rip offs although rebalancing of tires is pretty important especially if you are like me and rarely rotate them

I'm glad to get any response. I disagree about balancing unless you hit a pothole or something. They say rotate at 10k, then want to rip you off for like $60 with re-balancing. I pay a local garage to just rotate at 12k miles. I don't trust the dealer. I feel like if I bring it to them, I give them a license to steal from me.

timing belt is more like 100k miles ?

You guys must be talking about tire rotation, not tire balancing! Tire balancing is almost ALWAYS done for free and is usually not needed

You really shouldnt need tire balancing very often, but it is good to rotate the tires at least every 20,000 miles. Most places say to do it every 10-12000 miles though, but if you have alot of highway miles, then rotation every 20,000 miles should be fine.

I actually rotate my tires a little more than usual after I have had the car for 2 years. At that time, I buy 2 new front tires and move the front tires to the rear. Then every year after, I buy 2 more tires for the front front and rotate the front to the back, always in a criss cross fashion..

Thus I keep tires for 2 years and about 35000 miles each.

Doug they will steal from you. Just a couple months ago I had breaks put on my car and paid for new rotors as well. Brought it back after 3 weeks because I could hear a nasty grinding sound. The guy said he took it apart and lubricated and sprayed Brake cleaner and the noise stopped for about a week. Finally took it back yesterday and told them i think they never replaced the rotors. They put brand new pads on and turned the rotors true. Why would they need turned of they were new? Fucking rip offs. This was at Tire Kingdom.

NEVER, EVER......................

Go to JUSTBRAKES! They CLAIM to change your brakes for $99.00 for all 4 wheels.

Well dateline did a special on this place around the country and found that less than 5% of customers are actually offered that price. I went in a few years before that special and told that I wanted the $125 special. Guy says OK. I go back about 4 hours later to pick up my car and he claims that he was trying to call me to tell me that I needed NEW CALIPERS and other shit. I KNEW that I didnt need that, but his cost was now $725! I told him no and paid them $40 for looking and took it to my dealer. The dealer only charged me $210 for EVERYTHING!

Alot of bad things can be said about bringing your car into the dealer, but ONE THING THAT wont happen is that you wont get screwed. They are happy with your business. If you have your shit done elsewhere for a little less, then you are MUCH more likely to get screwed.

Many times, the dealer will actually charge LESS than the discount guys

When you buy replacement tires, they rotate it free, not so with a new car. I take it to the dealer for oil changes because they are close, and sold me like 10 oil changes for $150, they always try to upsell me stuff, like a cabin air filter. the re-balance sell at 10k for $60 convinced me that they want to rip me off, I tell them to just change the Fucking oil !

I'd agree with that for brakes. I'm not enough of a mechanic to fuck with brakes myself, but I'm capable enough to say change out a starter motor or alternator, radiator, battery, etc. I know my limits.

I beleive that the 30k is needed...JMO
I payed all he charges which were low for the 30 & 75k and greater when the 60 and 100k's are done. You never know when your waranty could be used and you want all the documentation that you did complete these services....JMO

If they used aftermarket rotors, some brand will recommend you to cut them. White box rotors are cheep, about $20.00 dealer price and sometimes are warped.

by 100k you have warranty left, normally. That's when I like to buy, most vehicles now run 200k+. I used to buy old Toyotas with 200k for cheap like a 77 Corolla or pickup in the mid 80's ( for like $2-300), never got burnt, got that last 50k out of them. If they run that long, it's no lemon, you got a good one ! I must have bought about 5 of those when I was young and lived like an illegal Mexican.
I used to almost have a fleet of uninsured beaters ! :103631605

I used to own like 3-4 beaters at a time, tried to keep at least two operable, so I had a back-up car. I'd swap plates onto the one with gas in it, to get to work, steal some copper for gas money.

I was like an honorary Mexican, and I lived in the barrio. I had bicycles to back up the fleet, too ! I don't really miss those days in Carlsbad,Ca, or maybe I do ?

I got away with it.

Yes, don't let them rope you into it. This service will consist of nothing more than a visual inspection of fluids (tranny, coolant, ect), brakes and tires. You can check these items out on your own and save yourself the $105/hr that they are going to charge your for about 20 minutes worth of "diagnostics". It is nothing more than a glorified oil change...

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.... they would actually perform the questionable maintanence, IMO !

My local said like $150 depending on what's listed. I may just change the ATF.

My Lexus just reached 100k and I had the platinum warranty. I drove the car hard and at 85k I had to have the transmission replaced. Didnt pay a dime. Now I baby the car...LOL:103631605
