I heard on ESPN radio this morning that the Mets have joined the Yankees, Red Sox, and both Los Angeles teams, Dodgers and Angels as clubs that are all making offers to the Twins.

Santana is eligible for free agency after the 2008 season, and the Twins have been trying to sign the two-time AL Cy Young Award winner to an extension. He reportedly turned down a four-year, $80 million extension offer from the Twins. Wow -- at 29 who can tell what Johan has left in the tank.....

tampa bay

in reality now it will be a all out bidding war. yanks would have to give up to much youth (although any team will end up doing that anyway). i like him in the angels rotation

That would be an interesting deal, the entire Tampa Bay roster straight up for Santana.

I remember back in 1960 that the Cleveland Indians and Detroit Tigers were not really seriously discussing trading complete rosters outright but is was a rumor.

They did end up with a then blockbuster trade that shook the baseball world such as it was back then by tading AL batting champ Harvey Kuenn for AL home run champ Rocky Colavito heads up. Colavito hit 42 homers and 111 RBI's in 1959 while Kuenn hit .353 to lead the AL. in batting. Rocky was 26 and Harvey 29.

i hope the yanks dont give up melke and hughes for js!! both are young and hughes will be a dominant pitcher in a couple years and could be in the pin strips for years and years, melke brings a swagger and fun to the clubhouse

i would love to have js, but as a yankee fan i dont want them to give up these kids

Red Sox are fools to trade Bucholtz and Ellsbury for JS.

I'd like to see the Yankees just take a pass on Santana. He's already begun his regression (albeit still a top shelf pitcher) but someone is going to get stuck paying $23 mil for a guy who's league average 3 to 5 years from now.

Rumor I heard was he also turned down $93 million for five years

Best move for the Twins might be to hold on to him. The trade value of a starting pitcher will not drop during the season -- it's not like a third baseman, every team needs at least five

Yanks are not letting Cano/Joba go anywhere. With that said, I have no problem with the Yanks moving Melky + Ian Kennedy + ANYONE in the farm system. Then the Yanks will get Johan and go get Rowand for CF and keep Hughes/Joba

Dont think the mets have the players to get the deal done.

Still see yankees with Hughes, Melky and a prospect as the most likely deal.

Tampa and minny close to making a deal.

Twins receive:
OF Delmon Young
SS Brendan Harris
OF Jason Pridie

Rays receive:
P Matt Garza
SS Jason Bartlett
P Juan Rincon

Tampa is closing in on being a really good team. Some more pitching and they are there.

Gotta think the twins would demand either Hughes or Chamberlin back in a deal, and rightfully so. They need a starter who is ready to be in rotation opening day.

Tampa has enough young talent where they could get Johan for three players. However they are not going after Johan since they have zero chance of signing him long term.

Santana Becomes Free Agent After Mets Decline Contract Option

By Nancy KerchevalNovember 02, 2013

Johan Santana, who pitched the New York Mets’ first no-hitter in 2012, became a free agent when the Major League Baseball team declined a $25 million option on his contract.
A two-time Cy Young Award winner for the Minnesota Twins in 2004 and 2006, the 34-year-old Santana was among 11 players added to the free-agent list yesterday, according to the players’ union.
Instead of receiving the option in the seventh year of his contract with the Mets, Santana was paid a buyout of $5.5 million.
“I am not sure what the future holds, as this is all new to me, but I have every intention of pitching in 2014 and beyond and I am certainly keeping all my options open,” Santana said in a statement.
Santana struggled with injuries during his years with the Mets while posting a 46-34 record and a 3.18 earned run average over parts of four seasons. He had elbow surgery in 2009 and tore the anterior capsule in his left shoulder in 2010, forcing him to miss the 2011 season.
This year, Santana reinjured his shoulder and needed more surgery.
