Ways to Turn Down a Promotion??

Was offered a promotion at work recently, and I don't want to take it AT ALL. It involves up to 50% travel, and I am a newlywed. I love my current boss, hate the guy I would be working for. I love my current job, don't think I would particularly care for this one. I have friends at this office, the facility I would be working from is full of douchebags.

All for a VERY slight increase in pay. Not worth it at all IMO. How do I turn this down tactfully?

negotiate the salary increase to make it worthwhile or don't take it

did the HR dept offer it to you? your current boss, new boss?

you gotta tell them the reason you don't want the promotion (don't lie)

Tell them you'd rather be a captain in hawaii than a General in Alaska.

(Potential) new boss offered it. I want to be honest -- what sucks is (and I have seen it with my company), turning down a promotion labels you as one who is not interested in moving up. I am, but the circumstances just aren't lining up this time.

be tactful about it...do explain to him that you are a recently married and that you don't think you are ready for all the travel..etc..just yet..thank him for the offer and tell him that in time you would love to have the opportunity again...not sure how old you are but.. if you are still young just let him know politely that you are just getting used to your position and always thank him for the consideration..now, put that in your own words and get after it..good luck...:toast::toast:

quote the peter principle and tell them that you've already reached your ultimate level of incompetence.

can you go to your current boss?

I totally know what you mean about turning down a promotion... some companies look at that like a slap in the face... but if you do this properly you could set yourself up for bigger things...

go to your current boss, ask him what the companies plans are for you. Is the company asking you to take this job because no one else will take it? or is it because they think you are the best one to do the job.

This is a tough one...if you turn it down you may be looked over for future spots...

Let them know you'd rather increase your role locally...

The easiest way is just to play the newlywed card and say that you're not interested in travel.

Turning down a promotion isn't as easy as it sounds. It could reflect badly if you do so, but I think the desire not to travel is one of the better reasons.

That is what I have done. I have told my current boss (who doesn't want to lose me BTW) about my concerns. Hopefully upper management can come to the conclusion that this might not be the right time and place for me.

I'm 26. I am leaning on my desire to start a family sometime in the very near future as my main concern (travel).
