Joe Namath was larger than life. He was a highly-touted high school prospect who starred for Bear Bryant at Alabama, took New York City by storm and led the New York Jets of the upstart AFL to a Super Bowl victory he had brashly guaranteed.

Sounds like a good idea for a movie.

Good enough that Universal Studios will make a movie about the Hall of Fame quarterback, with Jake Gyllenhaal playing Broadway Joe, according to reports.

Jake Gyllenhal seems like a good choice to me. I can see the physical resemblance.

Jake of course is not a gay cowboy. He is an actor. I personally have nothing against gays so it wouldn't matter to me regardless. But I am getting a tone of homophobic disapproval from this thread so far.

If movies casting for macho characters ruled out everyone who had ever played a gay role, they would sure limit their options.

A few examples of actors who have played gay (and also macho) roles: Val Kilmer, Heath Ledger, Ewan McGregor, Russell Crowe, Tom Hanks, Antonio Banderas, Kevin Kline, Colin Farrel, Guy Pearce, Clive Owen, Al Pacino.

I'm sure there are a ton more.

All of the above, definitely gay.

Also, I may be extremely sarcastic with both the thread title and my last response. I may be.

No matter what his preference no doubt he will play a better Namath than Joe did on any of his characters in his ill fated attempt at acting.
