You had to be there. No watching on TV.

For me it was the Bud Harrelson/Pete Rose fight in the '73 National League Playoffs. I was 10 years old sitting in the right field mezzanine--still have the ticket stub.

Not much of a fight actually. It was what happened afterwards.

Pete Rose was playing right field, and the fans started throwing all kinds of crap at him after he took the field after the fight. Mets were well ahead, game in hand, and all of a sudden the outfield scoreboard says that the game will be a forfeit if the fans don't stop throwing shit at Pete Rose.

Nobody cares. They're still throwing shit.

Yogi Berra, the manager of the Mets, comes out to right field and says--"stop throwing shit!"

Nobody cares. The loudspeaker says, "please stop throwing shit or the Mets are going to have to forfeit the game!"

Pete Rose wasn't even there anymore. The entire Reds defense had gone to sit on the bench. People were throwing shit at where Pete Rose would have been standing!

Rusty Staub (the hero of the game so far) came out and said, "stop, stupid Mets fans, we're going to lose the game because of you!"

Ha! You had to be stupid to be a Mets fan. They were'nt going to fall for that one. They continued to throw their shit onto an empty right field.

Finally...out of the Mets dugout came Willie Mays. He slowly--very slowly, because he was so old--strolled to right field, lifted his arms and silently implored the fans to stop. That look on his face--I'll never forget it.

The fans became totally silent. And they stopped throwing their shit. All for Willie.

Still brings a tear to my eye.

Pete Rose, Bud Harrelson, Rusty Staub, Yogi Berra, Willie Mays. And this all happened DURING THE DAYTIME when a kid could actually watch it.

I don't care what anybody says--it just isn't like this anymore.

My first ever game at Fenway.........

Witnessed the infamous Thurman Munson bowling over of Carlton Fisk on a failed suicide bunt attempt and the brawl that followed.

The year was 1974

Great write-up.
Mays was the man.

Shaq vs Tenn center whos name i probably never knew...theyu came to blows under the goal and Dale Brown came off the bench and got the Tennessee player in a headlock...Came damn close to going Woody Hayes on his ass.. They let Brown off by saying he was just breaking up the fight but that wasnt true. his intention when he ran out there was to join in the fray and he did.
I also saw Shaq challange about 7 football players to a fight off campus 1 night. all 7 against him at once....just moments before they were ready to jump on a lil 5'11 point guard but when Shaq showed up they suddenly didnt want to get in trouble .........lol
Shaq had a few brawls around here, dunked a guys head in a toilet once, etc.. aaawwwwwww the good ol days..gone for ever i guess...

Don't know if any of you remember the "Presidental Physcial Fitness Program" from the 70's but had a black girl that outran all of the boys in the 100, the P.E. coach declared one of his guys as the winner. She then proceeded to whip the winners ass and they had to pull her off the coach, she won and fair and square and still laughs about this 30 yrs later. I saw her two weeks ago at my 25th reunion and she looks like she could still outrun most of the men i know.

One of the greatest fights I still remember was back in the old MSG. I was around 10 years old and the Rangers were playing the Bruins. I'm sure there were a few fights on the ice that night, but by far the best fights were in the stands. In this one fight this guy gets punched out and rolls down the stairs. He gets back up, goes all the way back only to get clocked again, and rolls right back down the stairs. No one was watching the game. Security took the combatants who were escorted out to a standing ovation.
