Better yet, can you do it if the team elects to punt the ball.........a punt onside kick.

I recall taking a coaching of football class at Iowa(Bobby and Mike Stoops were classmates) and posing your question, as well as the one I asked above, and nobody in the entire room knew the answer for sure, including the two Iowa assistant coaches at the time that were teaching the class.

Taking a football class at the Univ. of Iowa is not a good place to learn anything about football.:missingte

Yes you are allowed, but you are kicking from the 20 instead of the 30

Having said that, fairly certain a team cannot onside kick a "punt" after a safety for an onside kick.......but 50-50 on doing so from a kicking tee.

Never took the time to find out the answer to this, but somebody here will know for 100% certain.

At the time it was, not for certain currently.

How O'keefe, Iowa's offensive coordinator, has not been sent packing by now is beyond me.

Wait, I do know the answer, Kirk Ferentz.

I think Ferentz should take the Michigan job and Iowa should promote O'Keefe to head coach. :aktion033

Is O'Keefe on the hot seat with most Iowa fans in the state?

Certainly hope so...........

Yeah, I believe most of the Hawkeye fans would like to see him gone. ISU fans think he's a great off. coordinator. :nohead: Actually, he was still the off. coordinator in 2002 when Iowa had talent and everything was fine. Iowa truly lacks talent now and the OC always gets crucified, no matter where. There is nothing you can second guess more than play calling. Ferentz is crazy to stay at Iowa if he really had a chance to go to Michigan but I personally don't think he was ever asked. Maybe he will be now.

This may sound dumb but all video games never allowed you to do it. Being that games this day in age are made pretty much flawless, I always assumed it wasnt allowed.

According to the MADDEN video game, it will not let you kick an onside kick after a safety.

The video game makes you punt.

Still don't know for sure whether or not this is allowed. It came up in the Kansas-Missou game last week when Kansas took a safety down 6 late in the game and the safety made it an 8 pt game. Kansas did the free kick back to Missou but there was still time left on the clock. Was wondering why they did not onside it unless its against the rules?

I was wondering the same thing. At first I though it was a brilliant move by Mangino. It was still a longshot, but they had a much better chance of recovering an onside kick, scoring and making the two than going 98 yards. I was surprised neither Musberger or Herbstreit mentioned it either. I know you can do it in the NFL, and I always thought you could in college, too, but after seeing that game, I'm not so sure.

Maybe Mangino just had his mind on that big post-game roast beef sandwich.

I dont see whats wrong with it as long as you get it across before touching the ball.

Kansas didnt purposely take a safety right? The fact they didnt attempt an onside kick pretty much would indicate to me its not allowed. After all this was there only chance.

If you choose to punt it, I assume punt rules would apply so the ball would belong to the receiving (assuming that they did not touch it) wherever it comes to rest.

Legal or not, it's very difficult from that distance to even pull off an onsides.

You could try to just punt a hard line drive at someone on the front line. Worst case is they get out of the way and the ball bounces down field like a squib kick...or they catch it, I guess. But if it bounces off them you can jump on it.

Remember this issue coming up in the NFL a few years ago and you are, in fact, allowed to attempt an onsides after a safety. Some coach was criticized for not attempting one late in the game after taking a safety
