Three years ago I would have agreed with you. He certainly has trouble getting out of the gate. But look at OSU's finishes the past 4 years. When most teams would simply roll over and play dead (see Cal and Oregon), OSU has persevered and came out way better than most projected.
2007: Won 6 of last 7...bowl game pending
2006: Won 7 of last 8 including USC's first conference loss in forever, Hawaii in Hawaii, and Missouri in bowl game
2005: Sucked ass, breaking in new QB after Anderson goes to NFL and young secondary.
2004: Won 6 of last 7 and crushed ND in bowl
2003: 8-5, won bowl game in his first year.
So three of the past four years the team has kicked ass the back half of the season and is 3-0 in bowl games.
Riley is also coaching in Corvallis Oregon. Not LA, or Seattle, or Phoenix, or Tucson, or the Bay area.....Corvallis Oregon. Ever been there? Ever seen their stadium? I played high school football there...half of it remains the same dump as when I played 20sum years ago. He gets 1 and 2 and a few 3 star recruits (Mike Hass was a walk-on) and makes them play like 4 star and 5 star players.
Riley's personality bugs the shit out of me, but that is because I'm type A. I like coaches that show a little passion on the sideline and fire and brimstone when needed. But considering what he has done and where he is coaching, Mike Riley is a damn good football coach.
