"I thought Joe DiMaggio was the greatest defensive outfielder I ever saw," said Stengel, who managed DiMaggio from 1949-51. "But I have to rate Piersall better."

Running the bases backwards? Damn if thats not showboating I dont know what is... If that happened today he would get a nice 95 mph fastball right in the ribs.

Andruw Jones is the best cf I have ever seen. Im young so I havent seen as many as a lot of other people but I find it hard to believe that there has been other guys do it better than him. I know Mays was amazing and this Piersall im sure was a stud but Andruw Jones defensively especially in his prime was amazing

A case could be made for Paul Blair.

paul_blair_autograph.jpg

Blair won 8 Gold Gloves as a Center Fielder while playing for the Baltimore Orioles. Willie Mays won an unprecedented 12 Gold Gloves in a long career as a Giant while in both New York and San Francisco.

Jim Piersall won two as a Red Sox and waged a difficult battle with Bi-Polar Disorder that became the subject of the movie "Fear Strikes Out" with well known Hollywood star Anthony Perkins playing the role of Piersall.

Blair was probably the most daring centerfielder of his era because of his penchant for playing shallow and daring hitters to hit one over his head and still keep it in the park. He played and started for all of the great Oriole teams of the mid 60's thru the mid 70's. Never a great hitter, it was his glove and speed on the bases that kept him in the lineup on a team full of stars for 12 years, a team that won 4 World Series with Blair as their key defensively.

That's a laugh, I'm so old that they couldn't teach history yet when I was in grammar school.

Seriously, I do remember Piersall play but not as well as some of the other late 50's/very early 60's Red Sox like Ted Wiilliams, Jackie Jensen, Frank Malzone and Sammy White.

Viejo

You are right Karl Malden, who must have acted in 100 movies/TV shows over his long career played John Piersall, father of the troubled Jimmy.

Shot from the movie "Fear Stikes Out" Karl Malden and Anthony Perkins (famous for his roll as Norman Bates in Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 mega hit "Psycho").
