In MA, if you bought every scratch ticket, you would get back (on average) 76 cents per dollar spent.

I don't know how many tickets are in a roll but say 10x300=3000 bucks...anyone willing to take the chance for a big winner for a few stacks?

I'm considering this...it would definitely be a better return than most of my investments.

Forget scratch offs. Play the lottery. I would get Mr. Newlywed's email from the mods. When he is not hitting keno jackpots, he is ca$hing lotto tickets

Ask Doug, I'm sure he'll crunch the #s for you after he gets back from dropping bottles off in Michigan.

you can't be serious. you would definitely lose close to half your money- depending on which state you live. These things are huge moneymakers for the states.

On average you would have $2,280 worth of winners in MA ... maybe more, maybe less ... but that is what you would average ... and the worst part is that MA has one of the highest payout averages (i.e. expected value) in the US

Don't forget that the average payout includes the top heavy grand prizes. Unless you hit something big, it is very likely you would be getting back less than 40 cents on the dollar or worse.

My friend runs the 3rd highest volume store in Louisiana for lottery sales. Over $30,000 a month . He has NEVER sold a grand prize scratchoff. He only in the last year sold a ticket for over $5,000........and for anybody thinking of buying a whole roll, you have to be kidding. As WVU said if they have 1 $40,000 winning ticket that means there are over 60,000 losing tickets just to pay for that 1 !!! Dont think you cant buy an entire roll of 250 tickets and not get even $10 back because not only is it possible its highly likely...

Ny scratch offs are about 65- 70 % return.

Total waste of cash but people still believe in the dream.

$10 tickets come in packs of 50. $5 tickets packs of 100

It is fun to give in B-day cards when you don't know what else to get, but otherwise is a sheer waste of money.

Interesting thing (at least in NY).....they say the winners are sent out randomly. But then figure this....
The state must take off all remaining tickets of a particular game once all the jackpots of that game have been sold. Example...if there is "NY Riches" game and the game advertises 5- One Million dollar jackpots.....once all 5 jackpots have been claimed, the state has to remove all of NY Riches from being sold.

So you would think if this were done randomly, at least a few times in the past years, some game would be taken off the shelves within the 1st month of being sold.
Yet , has never happened ( to my knowledge). Every game goes on for a long healthy life span. Enough time to ensure selling millions of tickets. hmmmmm.
