A head scratcher: Eckstein leaves Cards for one year deal 4.5 mil

I just don't get it. Why did the Cardinals let him go? 4.5 mil is very reasonable to pay him. And he was a fan favorite in the best baseball city in America. Why leave that? And if you're going to leave, why only sign a one-year deal, when you can lock up all that guaranteed money?

Only thing that makes sense is that he hated LaRussa and wants to come back to STL, hoping that LaRussa will be gone after next year. Any other ideas?

Yeah, that he took the best offer

I mean, guy has an OBP of .350 which isnt good, has zero power, doesnt steal much and plays good D

Why pay someone like that a multi year deal?

Who exactly wanted him?

He was a team guy and clutch performer, but his stats are nothing more than role player or #7 hitter

far overrated. Has to play a full step in from most shortstops due to his ridiculously bad throwing arm. That adds up to a lot of runs over the course of a season. Have to respect the guy, as he is a gamer, but not a real good player by any means.

Pretty hard to be overrated, when there is really nobody rating you high. He epitomizes what St Louis Cardinal baseball is all about, though. All class, all team, all hard work, unselfish, and a winner. How do you let a guy like that get away? All of the fans wanted him back.

I am very down on are Cards as well. Dewitt has now a new stadium, owns the radio station, village going up around ballpark,etc. and this team gets cheaper every year. I personally believe he is setting the team up to be sold. No other rhyme or reason. They are not even building up the farm system. Sucks to be a Cards fan these days.

I havent been to the new Stadium. I have been to the old stadium once and it will probably be the last time I ever go to St Louis! That city is trash!

Cards also traded Jim Edmonds. Good move. Edmonds is on the other side of the hill. He can still play defense, but his offense is not there anymorw and he can't stay healthy. Cards need to build for the future. I think the Cards have a 3-5 year plan rather than a 2008 plan. Might make sense to dump Rolen as well.
