He never actually uses the A-word, but tennis bad boy Jimmy Connors claims his engagement to Chris Evert ended because she chose to have an abortion in 1974.
And why reveal it now, four decades later? To sell books, of course. The claim is in his upcoming memoir, “The Outsider,” reports the N.Y. Daily News.
“An issue had arisen as a result of youthful passion and a decision had to be made as a couple,” writes Connors, who was 22 to Evert’s 19.
He said he wanted to “let nature take its course,” the Daily News reports, but “Chrissie ... made up her mind that the timing was bad and too much was riding on her future.”
Connors says his response was: “Well, thanks for letting me know. Since I don’t have any say in the matter, then I guess I’m just here to help.”
They broke up soon afterward.
In 1979, Connors married Playboy Playmate of the Year Patti McGuire and they have two children. Evert, who married three times, had three sons after she retired from tennis.
Her camp declined to comment.
