What experience (if any) are they required to have before hiring?
How long and of what type training are they Requirred to attend (yearly or monthly or ?)

Maybe it's me but they just DO NOT (as a group) appear as professional as MLB Umpires.

It's just a part-time job for these guys. I think the top of the pay scale is 100K for the guys that have been around. And they all have regular careers. One of the head referees is a professor at Michigan St.

I do know that it is a pretty demanding part-time job, though. Every Saturday, they watch the film from the previous week and are evaluated on every play.

The National Football League (NFL) pays referees anywhere from $25,000 to $70,000 per season. When you consider that the league plays 16 games and referees are considered part-time employees, you get a better sense of the disparity. But do not feel so bad for them, not only are there only 16 games in the schedule, they also get one-week intervals.

Not to mention the "extras" for the phantom holding calls, missed pass interferences, advantageous spots, etc.

$25,000 to $70,000 per season is peanuts compare to what the NBA and NHL and MLB are paying their refs, and umps. Yet the NFL is the biggest money maker of all sports worldwide.

NO WONDER VEGAS WILL TAKE BIG MONEY ON NFL Games--This is a joke. And speaking of joke calls.. Replay--so what if a call gets overturned; is the referee fired? Face mask calls 5 or 15 yds. is a real joke from some I've seen.
