Yesterday we got a major snowfall, about two feet in total. Yesterday afternoon I was out shovelling my driveway when this golden lab comes running by. I have seen a neighbour walking her in the past but today she was by herself, obviously escaped from the yard.

I went to grab her by the collar to take her home. I live beside a big wooded area with walking trails and she took off into the woods before I could grab her. I started to chase her because it was really cold and now getting dark and I'm thinking she is dead if she spends the night outside.

I guess she thought it was a game because everytime I came within 10 feet she took off again. I'm running with huge boots on, big jacket and snow up to my knees.

After about 20 mintues of me chasing this f'n dog I'm am exhausted, and pretty sure I'm going to have a heart attack, die in the woods and not be found until spring. The dog decides that she is tired of the woods and crosses the street, runs down a hill near a decent size pond. I follow like an idiot because now I'm going to get this dog on principle alone.

As I get close the dog walks out onto the pond...didnt see that coming. As she gets out about 15 feet the ice cracks and in she goes. Now I have to save her because its probably my fault she ran out there and fell in.

I run out onto the pond, ice cracks and in I go. Its only about waist deep as it was close to the side. I work my way over to the dog and grab onto her. She is kicking and trying to get out. She kicks me in the face and chest several times but I was finally able to push her onto the ice. She takes off again and runs up the hill.

I make my way back to the side out of the pond and out of the water. I'm freezing, my cellphone was in my pocket and is now ruined, my wallet soaked and I still havent got this f'n dog.

By the time I get back up the hill I see the dog walking beside her owner who had noticed that she was missing and went to find her.

The worst part about it was that after the half hour I chased this damn dog, saved her from drowning, ruined my clothing and phone and froze my junk, the owner had no idea what I had done and thought she had found her on her own.

Either I screwed someone over and this was payback or I have some good Karma coming my way.

This is a pet peeve of mine, and it happens all the time out here.

HELLO PEOPLE!!!! If a 20-50lb dog breaks through the ice, what do you think that your 150-250lb ass is going to do?

Two or three people out here died in one weekend a while back from this exact same thing.

Oh I knew I was going in, I knew it wasnt that deep. I knew the dog was dead if I didnt go in.

I'm not going to say it was the most well thought out idea I've ever had and no, I didnt miss my MENSA meeting because of it.

As I walked home with my jeans feezing up to the point where I could barely bend my legs and I could see the dog and owner 100 feet ahead of me, oblivious to what had happened, I couldnt help but laugh

If the little white dot turns red forget about the insurance. It covers everything but water damage.

Tell that to the parents of the 19 yr old female college student who died out here doing this. BTW, the dog got out just fine on it's own-as they usually do.

buy a replacement battery first then take it in for warrantee replacement. Screw them for not insuring it when it gets wet. That is how they all break pretty much

Believe it or not I think there's alot of people out there with big hearts like this guy who risk their life for a dog, I applaud that. Some people mite say that's stupid, but human nature takes over and you just do what you have to do. People die and that's sad, but they made that choice. I would do the same.

I would guess that 75+% of dogs make it out of these situations on their own while probably 25% max of humans make it out alive if the water is over 5 ft. deep. Think about it-How much of a hero are you when your dog is standing on the ice looking for your dead, frozen ass which is at the bottom of the lake?
