Actually I came online because of a dispute I am dealing with and am answering a few wilheim posts.

ILMW - to be honest being a Viet Nam Veteran my life could have went down one of two roads (contraband wise). In the Nam you had two basic factions among the enlisted men in my outfit just like most other units in country. The first included mostly lifers (career soldiers) and some first termers like myself who were all boozers. We got drunk a lot.

The second, commonly known as "the heads" were the drug users, with weed not even considered a drug really, but a lot of dudes were into what was then called smack (heroin), a smaller group did acid and other hallucinogens that actually were smuggled from the US to Southeast Asia as opposed to the homegrown weed and heroin that was as easy as buying cigaretts or candy at that place and time.

So to answer your question, other than a little experimental weed back in the 70's during the post VietNam Disco era I have been a boozer and have not done many drugs. Last year I was given some valium by a doctor because of an incident and it really sent me for a loop, I didn't even know I was high until I was told later by several people including my boss who I had a meeting with during that week (I only had 30 5mg pills).

That said, I managed to stop drinking on the 22nd of April of 1990 and have not had a drink since that day. In the beginning I needed a lot of help from a lot of people, principally at first from the VA Hospital in Brocton Mass. So with plenty of support from the VA and a certain well known group one day at a time I made it thru my first year and it has got a little easier as the years went by but to this day I have to be careful around alcohol and cannot have even a single drink.

Sorry to dissapoint.

I actually never regarded tail (paid for or not) as contraband, but yes I did get my fair share. I arrived in VietNam a week shy of my 20th birthday and back then teenagers didn't get laid in as much as they did in later decades. While no virgin (barely) I was certainly not very experienced in matters of sex when I arrived in Viet Nam, luckily the older vets in my unit took me under their wing and showed me the ropes as far as hookers went.

I was later stationed in Germany where the quality of ladies of the night was substantially higher and not much more expensive. I know some of our German posters are familiar with the Kaiserstrasse in Frankfort and the Reaperbahn in Hamburg. Ahh to be young again.

Come on now - condoms were standard GI issue. They were like American Express you never left home without one or maybe three afterall I was 20 years old...Actually ALL the girls had plenty on hand and it was pretty much unheard of to go bareback with a hooker in Nam and in Europe for that matter..

That war was one serious clusterfvck to begin with and guys did what they did everywhere. The herion use that I saw was not your traditional shot in the vein with a syringe kind that you see in the movies but either smoked, or snorted. I am sure guys did carry "a set of works" with them and shot up but like I said I was in with the booze crowd and didn't see a lot of that kind of drug use.

Not that we were enemies or anything it's just that the dopers and boozers partied seprately for the most part. Weed was smoked pretty much anywhere except in offical Army headquarters buildings and such.

The main focus from day to day was to stay alive and overcome the extreme boredom that goes hand and hand with extremely chaotic and adrenaline spiking but brief periods of combat.

I did a term paper back in college some time ago about Vietnam and agent orange, I dont know why but I was also particularly drawn to the subject. I have a few questions if you dont mind:

1. Did you enlist or where you drafted.
2. Did you think at times during the war you were not going to make it out.
3. Did you lose friends due to the war
4. In comparison do you feel that todays war, even though not as many men have been lost, it is starting to be comparable time was to what is going on now.
5. Do you think fighting worse in wartime was in Vietnam or possibly urban warfare such as today.
6. When returning home after your time did you experience any negative feelings from citizens in the U.S. as a soldier being in the war.
And last what movie do you think best depicted the Vietnam War without overdoing it.
Dont mean to pry by never was able to actually speak to someone that was invloved first hand with Vietnam War.
