FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- As stunned bystanders watched, a Patriots fan on his way into Gillette Stadium for Sunday's game lept off an overpass and fell 17 feet onto the pavement below.

"He thought he was going to land in a snow bank," said one witness to the incident.

Boston television station WCVB reported that the 20-year old man was on a pedestrian walkway heading towards the stores at Patriot Place about 3:15 p.m.

"All of a sudden he jumped. He was screaming on the way down, then he was silent," said another witness.

The man bounced off the pavement below.

"He was unconscious and unresponsive," said Scott Rogers of Foxborough Fire and Rescue.

A medical helicopter landed on the Patriots' practice field and flew the man to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Officials there said he was in serious condition.

Police are investigating whether alchohol was involved.

"He definitely had something to drink. I think he had a great deal to drink," said a man who witnessed the incident.

Something doesn't make sense here. 17 feet really isn't "that" far.....certainly not "bounced off the pavement below" far.

Plenty far enough that it's going to do some damage if your head hits the pavement

A friend of mine was standing near that location (buying and selling tickets) and saw it as it happened. He was describing it to me over the phone last night and it sounded very disturbing.

Wow, cut across. That is one of those you would never forget if you saw it.

If I'm not mistaken didnt something like this happen at a different stadium a few weeks ago with the person pronounced dead on scene?

Rob,

I was hanging out with my buddy who witnessed this and I know exactly where this happened. There's this tunnel that leads from a big parking lot to this walkway that leads to to the stadium entrance near the practice field (and the Dana Farber indoor bubble). On each side of the tunnel there are slopes/hills that were covered in snow. The kid was at the top where cars drive into an upper lot (above the walkay). He thinks that the kid assumed that the slopes/hills were continuous. Unfortunately for him there was a gap with no hill, so when he leaped he fell all the way to the pavement (more like 20 feet below). He said that he jumped like he was going to land on his hip in to the snow, but the hill was not there. He said it happened around 3:15PM. 10 minutes later and he would've landed on a few poeple heading into the game (the tail-gaters start to head in en masse at around 3:25).

Maybe he was a bookie and knew it was going to be a bad day by all the bets he had on New England. I am sure many of bookies in that part are ready to jump off something now a days. To bad he didn't wait until the end of the game he would of been jumping for joy.
