Not that anyone asked me but....

As I am watching the Cowboys/Redskins game I have come to the conclusion that the Redskins' Clinton Portis with the possible exception of Brian Westbrook and the jury still a little bit out on Adrian Peterson is better than any other running back in the NFC right now including Shaun Alexander and Edgerrin James.

TD Redskins - Katy bar the door...

Looks like the Skins are heading west this week and just happen to be playing some very good football for a #6 seed. They will carry a 4 game win streak with them. Including wins over the Bears, Giants, Vikings and Cowboys. Their last loss was on December 2nd by a point to the Bills.

With the exception of Westbrook all the backs you mention lack the leadership that Portis now brings to a team as he has matured over the last couple of years. Plus he is a monster workhorse with over 320 carries so far this year.

i've never considered Portis much of a leader. what exact leadership qualities are you talking about? You also have to consider with the exception of Westbeez, the other 3 are still fairly young guys in the league and since they are on teams with veteran pro-bowl type players so they don't necessarily need to take a leadership role.

Portis from all accounts, with no established QB on the team has stepped up to become one of the two leaders of the team on offense. Players like Barber, Steven Jackson and Adrian Peterson are not as key to their teams as Portis along with Santana Moss who are more or less co-leaders of the Redskins offense.

I listened to this game on Redskin radio and watched it with the volume off my TV. You get a better take on a team from their radio announcers than you do from your basic Fox or CBS neutral booth teams.

Good point on Portis' blocking, he may be the best blocking taliback in football.

He killed my team in fantasy football this year. He really turned it on right when Campbell got hurt. Collins seems to have a better command of the offense right now.

With the season on the line Portis came thru for the Skins.

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) -- Here's an unusual stat line for a running back: Clinton Portis threw a touchdown pass and was sacked in the same game.
The touchdown pass, to Antwaan Randle El in the second quarter of the Washington Redskins' win over Minnesota, was the third of his career. In fact, every time Portis has completed a pass in the NFL, the receiver has scored.

The sack? That was the first of his career. It came in the third quarter, when the Redskins went to the trick play yet again.

"Before that play, the coaches talked to me and said 'If it's not there, go down or throw it out of bounds,"' Portis said. "I knew if I threw it out of bounds, it was going to mess up my passing rating that I acquired over the last six years. I went on and took the sack."

Portis' performance last week earned him the honor of NFC offensive player of the week, but he's a more fitting candidate for the Redskins' comeback player of the year. His stock was at an all-time low in September -- "The demand for me is high right now, and I haven't supplied a lot," he said days before the season opener -- but his numbers, his dedication and his attitude have combined to produce a season that reinforces his value to the team.

"He's one of those backs you can never give up on," receiver Santana Moss said.

This was supposed to be the year Portis became half of a rotating backfield with Ladell Betts. Two shoulder injuries and a broken hand had ruined Portis' season in 2006, and persistent tendinitis in his knee sidelined him for most of the offseason practices and nearly all of this year's training camp.

Now look at his statistics, and -- surprise! -- Portis has started all 15 games and is tied with Edgerrin James for most carries (300) in the NFC and is trailing only Pittsburgh's Willie Parker (321) in the NFL. Portis is third in the NFC in yards rushing (1,158) and his 362 yards receiving are two shy of his career high.

Betts, meanwhile, has become an afterthought, with 83 carries for 306 yards.

Even Portis is amazed at how fresh he is as the Redskins (8-7) prepare for the season finale against the Dallas Cowboys with a playoff berth on the line. His yards from scrimmage during the current three-game winning streak: 122, 126, 124.

That's pretty good for December.

"I found it strange for myself to feel the way I feel," Portis said Thursday. "Today I realized I was second in the NFL in carries."

Like the Redskins, Portis has been inconsistent, but that's due in part to factors beyond his control. A huge chunk of his rushing yards came in back-to-back games against the New York Jets (196) and Philadelphia (137), but a heavier emphasis on the passing game and injuries along the offensive line cut his production over the following weeks. He's averaging only 3.9 yards per carry for the season, well below his career average of 4.5.

Portis also is a powerful blocker, fearless when it comes to putting his body in the way of a blitz. He thinks one reason he's been catching more passes lately is because defenses know better than to blitz.

"I think teams have gotten away from sending that 'bonsai blitz,"' he said with a knowing smile. "I have been punishing linebackers."

Portis became the face of the grieving Redskins last month after the death of his close friend, safety Sean Taylor, and it's a role he's ready to relinquish. Portis was the only active player on the team to speak at the funeral, and he and his teammates have dedicated the rest of the season to their fallen teammate, but they want to do so in their own way.

"You can't forget about that situation, but at the same time constantly people want to talk about it," Portis said. "You're tired of talking about it. We go through it enough having to come in this locker room, seeing the memorial, knowing that he's not out here. It's enough for us, but constantly people want to continue to talk about it every day: 'Oh, my condolences.' We appreciate it, but, you know, pray about it."

That's exactly what I was thinking when I drafted him (as what I thought was a steal) in the 3rd round of my fantasy fball league. He f'n sucked bad for the majority of the season and only heated up after I traded him. He was nothing last year either-injured or not. He is in the top half of the league of rbs.

Speaking of Marion Barber

Marion Barber not only finished 25 yards shy of his first 1,000-yard season, but Barber (minus-6 yards) and Julius Jones (7) combined for 1 yard today against a fired up Redskins defense - setting a new franchise record for rushing futility.

Rams RB Steven Jackson ran 18 times today for 55 yards and no scores as his team was routed by Arizona. AP ran 11 times for 36 yards no TDs in a Vikings loss.

I'll take Portis this year over AP. AP was hurt and disappeared down the stretch. Portis played his best at the same time. Guess who is in the playoffs? Two-three years down the road, AP is the answer, but not in 2007.

Portis problaly best back in NFL for month of Dec...

Portis can run, catch and is best blocking RB in the league...

Portis > Barber...

I am still not sure where the love for Barber comes from... 5 YPC is great but the guy made the probowl and did not get 1k yards on the season and had less the 200 carries...Romo opens up everything for that running game...

Portis #'s are up since Skins have been able to throw the ball the last few weeks...

I'm a Portis fan. He is smart funny and a team leader. I heard him on some rare local radio interviews and he tells some wild stories including stuff about never getting a second look from the 'U' women cause he drove a beat old clunker around campus (I don't know if I believe that any more than the Redskins claim that he ran a 4.26 40 in training camp). He is a welcomed contrast to the always vanilla personality redskins but most of all he takes a pounding every game and is worth watching every time he touches the ball. Redskins will be worth a look next week; they are a dangerous team with Collins efficiency (btw, Collins is free agent and made himself a large pile of money in these last few weeks).
