Natrually the loss of HC Rich Ridriguez to Michigan is
difficult to evaluate but has to be seen as a serious negative for a team
that may not have lived down their huge regualar season upset loss
at the hands of Pittsburg (5-7 on year) at Morgantown on Dec 1st. yet.
Rught now WVU is being coached by committee led by interim HC Bill Stewart.
WVU relies almost entirely on the run (4th in Nation) avering 293 YPG
on the ground. They are 114th nationally in passing offense (156.7 YPG)
WVU is 19th overall in offense avering 450 YPG.
WVU is 3rd in total defense allowing 292 YPG. They have a big play
defense with 37 sacks and 33 takeaways.
Key Players:
RB Steve Slaton - 1053 Yards and 17 TDs on 210 carries.
Caught 25 balls for 348 yards and 1 TD.
Running QB Pat White is real star of team with 1185 Yds rushing on 177 carries and 14 TDs.
White passed for 1548 Yds on 134 of 197 passes with 12 TDS and just
4 Ints.White was named Big East Offensive Player of the Year for 2nd straight year..
White sat out half of Pittsburg game with thumb injury but is 100% for this game.
RB/TE Owen Schmitt known for his feroucios hitting on offense.
WR Darius Reynaud 59 receptions for 691 yards and 11 TDs.
Analysis:
Again like the Outback Bowl the game will come down to the dog's ability
to run the ball. Okla held 9 of 13 opponets under 100 yards rushing this year.
The question is can Steve Slaton and especially QB/RB Pat White put enough enough yardage and therefore 1st downs and points on the board to overcome the high powered Okla. offense.
Oklahoma has the team speed on defense to contain Pat White and make him throw the ball. Should Oklahoma get an early lead it will put WVU in a difficult position of trying to play catchup with a running game.
Personally I doubt if it can be done, throw in Bob Stoops Vs. Bill Stewart and you have a serious head coaching gap for WVU to overcome.
Looking at the schedule that WVU played I am struck by the lack of any real strong opponets. Difficult games against Cinncinati, UCONN, Pitt (debatable) and ACC middle of the pack but Bowl team Maryland are the toughest.
Oklahoma by beating Missouri twice, plus Texas, Ok St, Iowa St.and Tex AM played a much more difficult schedule..
As much as I do not like laying a lot of points (7.5), the Bowl games are the place to do it if there is ever a preferred type of game for playing a favorite that clearly has better atheletes (witness USC, Georgia, Missouri etc).
I am looking for Oklahoma with their huge O line to outscore the Mountaineers by more than the posted at Bookmaker.com spread of -7.5 points.
Lay the 7.5 points on the Sooners...
Caveat Emptor....
