You see it all the time......3rd and 5 or 3rd and 6, and teams with a 1-2, or 3 point lead run on 3rd down, then punt it away to the other team who always seems to easily drive into field goal range and win or tie the game when, if they passed, and got a 1st down, it would essentially end the game.

Agree coaches scared to think of going for the kill.

1st down is the easiest down to throw on. Teams never seem to know this.

Coach's are just a bunch of sissy's these days.

Steelers basically averaged under 2 yards per rush tonight and tried to run for it on 3rd and 6 with a QB with a bad leg.......I just dont get it sometimes. hell, a screen pass there has a better chance.

I agree and if I were a coach I'd trust myself with the ball over the other team.

But I have seen teams throw on those 1st and 3rd downs....when it goes incomplete, the announcers say the coach is retarded....and then the other team gets the ball back anyways but with more time.....

they are trying to get the 1st down, but on the ground....it is the "safe" thing to do.

True, but I have no problem running on 1st and 2nd down to try to get the first. On 3rd and medium..........?????? (with Parker out) Your weapons are Roethlisberger (passing), Ward, Holmes, and Miller.......they shouldve passed it to end it.

99% of NFL coaches (or every coach outside of Belichick) coach not to lose, rather than coach to win

Besides Belichick, I have see Shanahan and Martz go for the kill too. Other than that, they're NOT innovators ... they just do what has traditionally been done.

In my opinion, you should always do everything possible to get the 1st down. Even if you get a pick 6, you have 2 minutes left...

Years ago they called it "Smash Mouth Football" But now it's just Run the Clock and hope for the best.

I think that over the years, Coaches have see Too many Picks when throwing on 3rd down towards the end of the game.

In Tonight's game, Steelers did the Same thing as the Jags Did !
Got a Lead, and played like Babies to hold it.

I would rather see a Team go out there and Kick some @ss...:beavis1:

Yea now that you mention Shanahan - the 1997 AFC title game in Pittsburgh, Denver was up 3 with 2 mins left and faced a 3rd and 6 on their own 30 and he called a successful pass from Elway to Sharpe to seal the game. Good call cincy

Jags just played dumb up 18. They shouldve ran Taylor & MJD. Instaed Del Rio had Garrard throwing the ball & he threw 2 picks to Pitt back into the game.

I have no idea why they don't. You have to go for the jugular when you have the chance.
