Good hotel when staying in Vegas? Any opinions (Pro or Con) from prior guests or Vegas locals would be helpful. Thanks.

I stayed at the nugget last year. It was fine for me but I had business meetings. The only problem with it is, it is a hike from the strip if you wanted to spend a lot of time on the strip it is not recommended. If you like downtown(old Vegas) it is a great spot.

Agreed, the pool area at the Negget is sweet. Stayed downtown for the first time last summer and it was a nice change from the strip. Casinos offer lower limits and cheaper drinks.

The good: best hotel downtown, nice coffee shop, decent spa, adequate rooms, casino rules are better than strip.

The bad: check-in is pain in the butt, South Tower is a long walk from everything (try for North Tower), sportsbook blows (go to Plaza).

You guys are great. Appreciate the comments and suggestions. Just booked it for an extended weekend (Thurs-Mon.). This will be my first Vegas experience. Thanks.

The remodel turned out great however they have the worse gambling in the downtown area - 6/5 blackjack and horrible VP tables.

4queens ( next door) has some single deck 3-2 games.

You can catch a bus to the strip for about $2, BTW. They run frequently.

an honest opinion:

while the nugget is prob. the best hotel downtown- i wouldn't stay downtown on your first trip to vegas unless you are doing it for financial reasons (cheaper).

Last time I was there they only had 1 table like that and the minimum was $100.

I was there in Sept, they had a few tables at 5-10 minimum, didn't see any of these games with high minimum at 4Q.

There weren't a lot of single deck tables, maybe 3.

A friend went to the Nugget a couple of weeks ago and I believe he said the pool was closed. They have been having a lot of problems with it since it opened. Check first and make sure you can use it before you go.

I agree. You have to do the strip on your first trip.

This time of year isn't exactly balmy in Vegas. I'm pretty sure that there are very, very few-if any pools open.

It has a great, remodeled smoke free poker room.

For breakfast try the natural at Binions one morning, bone-in ham steak and eggs and even though Harrahs has upped the price its still under $5. Gives you the feel of Old Vegas. Call in the Golden Gate for the same reason, its the oldest hotel in town and still has the 99 cent shrimp cocktail (don't fall for the more expensive jumbo shrimp where the only difference is the size not the amount of the critters).

A local rich guy here owns it by the name of Tilman Fertitta.

Woody O -- -Harrah's doesn't own Binions downtown anymore. Mountaineer gaming owns it and is in the process of selling it to Terry Caudle. Caudle owns the 4Queens. Hopefully, Caudle can restore some glory to that property.

Fertitta and landry's restaurants owns Golden Nuggett.

Purdue Kev -- Try the Grotto restaurant at the Nuggett. It's top notch if you like Italian food.

I like the race/sports book. Great tv's. Some crappy lines especially if you like NHL but it's a nice book overall.

Definitely check out the Golden Gate too on a weekend night. Very raucous table games. They have an older waitress there who is the best waitress in town. Never an empty beer no matter how busy the place is.

I think staying downtown isn't a bad idea - a lot of people come to Vegas, stay on the strip and never get to experience the old Vegas.

When I was a kid my grandmother used to tell me that the Strip was only for the rich folk!
