I just recently moved into a new apartment, and the water pressure in the shower leaves A LOT to be desired. Maintenance has already been up here, but all they could do was install some water conservation shower head that's even worse than the previous one. They said they can't do anything without installing some booster pump for the entire building, which isn't gonna happen.

Is there anything I can do personally? Should I just get the best shower head I can find and deal with it?

Thanks.

Oh, also keep in mind that I'm the least handy person on the planet.

The piece that conserves water in the shower head comes out fairly easy. You could try that.

It is very likely that the water pressure is low because the building you live in has old galvanized steel pipes that have corroded and provide resistance, ie friction, against the water flow. A normal water pressure would be between 50-55 psi (pounds per square inch). As it tries to elevate to your apartment it meets resistance. A new shower head won't solve that problem, except to possibly give you a bit more flow. The fact that the landlord is telling you they need a pump to lift the flow and pressure indicates the resistance problem. If you are paying for the water bill separately, then call your water company and let them come out and check for you. If they find the building is not up to adequate standards, you have the right to bring the issue before the City's building department.

I had a simular problem in my home. My pressure was decent on one side of the house but the side where I take a shower sux. A plumber gave me the same spill about putting in that pump bs. I ended up buying like 3 or 4 different shower heads from different places with no luck. I finally found one online that did the trick. It was a very small shower head and it was cheap too. I'll look through my shit and see if I can dig something up cause I can remember going through the no pressure days and they suck.

Seymour, OMT, I think you're right about the elevation being a problem. The maintenance guy mentioned that people living on the highest floors essentially get screwed.

The water is included in my rent, so I don't think I can even bring in a plumber to take a look.

I doubt there's anything I can really do, but I figured I'd ask just in case. Motherfucker.

Thanks for the responses.

Iv'e Been A Plumber Now For 21yrs And What Oldman Fred & Fat Tony Tell You Are The Correct Answers, If Omf Is Right Not Much You Can Do About It But Most Likely Fat Tony Is Right And You Only Have To Remove The Shower Head From The Shower Arm And Remove The Restrictor. Even If Youre Totaly Retarted You Can Pull This Off. Gl

How much is your rent ?

Did you sign a years lease ?

It might be worth your while installing a hot water heater in your bathroom closet.

New hot water heater $400

Labour $200

Assuming rent of $1000 and you only staying the one year, $600 over 12 months = $50 a month

If you're paying $1000 a month in rent its only 5% increase in your rent for a year of great water pressure.
