i was wondering, should a local bookie move the las vegas line before putting the line up? if for example he sees that the local bettors tend to bet on favorites with -5 or more (-6,-7...), should he move the line a few points against the favorite before putting the line out?
the way it seems to me, if he wants to even the betting on both sides, he should move the line.
but why should he still want to move the line when the vegas linesmakers have got unnderdogs and favorites covering nearly 50% each?
if the people continue betting on favorites without him having to move the line, they will roughly go to 50% and therefore the bookie earns.
so what's the real deal and the smart practice for a local?

Sometimes the Line is moved to throw the person off on that side..
It's Better Done by Adding Juice to the Line....

So lets say you have a Line of -10 -110

You could move it a half to -10.5 -110, But ( My 2cents )
I would just add Juice to the -10.......-10 -125 or -10 -130

People tend to Shy away from the Extra Juice

A few points? Not in this day and age. Very few bettors are square enough to lay 7 when they could lay 5. Unless your bettors are really clueless, moving the line a half point - a full point TOPS - is about all you can get away with.

I used to work for an 'office' in Boston.
My guy was a master at profiling, once he picked up on your betting tendencies, he would adjust the line accordingly.

Shit I remember a friend of mine aked if this guy could get a # with me who I knew he would answer the phones sometimes for our bookie.

Anyway he was nothing but a fucking weasle middler,he'd call make a bet and hang up on me as I;m reading back, then call back and ask me to read back.

Got to the point I would put him on hold and call my offshore to update lines.

G.Bay/N.E. SuperBowl line was 14.

I listened to stardustline and JK said they were not getting off 14 so I followed suite even though was getting hammered on packers.

This ****** called every 20 minutes seeing if I'd get off 14.

You guessed it landed on 14.

He can and should do whatever he thinks is best for him. You don't have to bet his lines if you don't want to.

A REAL professional book doesn't need to move lines. He's an automatic winner in the system. There's no reason to re-invent the wheel. He's got more than enough players and cash to take the lows and the inevitable highs.

Smaller operations will. They aren't serious books.

Very sucessful locals especially those who have a relatively small clientele and have any brains at all (as already mentioned) book to faces within their client base. No real mystery how to do it, you simply pay attention to each players wagering habits read him lines that make him have the lay or take worst of it as often as possible.

I am not condoning this way of operating but it has been the reality with street or local bookies for decades. Parlay, teaser and other gimmick bettors don't even need to be faced as they will lose in the long run betting into a semi sharp line all on their own.

I've seen many a local get their ass beat with the above reasoning. One or two sharp players can devastate a local book. The local needs to be on his toes to survive nowadays and be willing to boot the sharpies when necessary.

small time jokers

Even if you beat a guy like that, eventually he won't have your money

waste of time

Not sure your definition of small time, but I've seen hundreds of thousands lost and paid before the local smartened up. I consider anyone giving out a stale fixed line at 6:30 pm a "local" and that person has the potential to get poleaxed if he's not on the ball.

a real book, operating as I stated above, wouldn't be fazed
