DES MOINES, IOWA — Drake scored the last 11 points of the game, while holding Missouri State without a basket in the final 4 minutes 17 seconds, to post a school-record 13th straight victory with a 65-54 Missouri Valley Conference decision past Missouri State Saturday night.
Senior forward
Klayton Korver broke out of a shooting slump by scoring a game-high 19 points, while senior guard
Leonard Houston added 16 points, including 12 in the second half, to lift Drake.
A second consecutive standing room only crowd of 7,047 saw the Bulldogs improve their record to 14-1 which is the best start ever in school history.
Drake also maintained a share of first place with Illinois State in the MVC standings at 5-0. Drake also earned its first victory against Missouri State since a 68-61 decision In Des Moines in Feb. 23, 2002.
The Bulldogs played without the services of sophomore guard
Josh Young who leads the MVC in scoring (16.3 avg.), while ranking second in three-point baskets (40).
Young, recovering from a sprained right ankle suffered against Indiana State Wednesday, watched in street clothes on the Drake bench.
Drake held Missouri State to just 33.3 percent shooting in the second half.
The Bulldogs also controlled the glass in the second half, outrebounding the Bears, 21-11, after trailing in that category at halftime, 18-10.
Dale Lambreth led Missouri State with 19 points and seven rebounds, while Deven Mitchell tallied 10 points. Missouri State fell to 9-8 including a 2-3 league mark.
The Bears closed out the game missing their last nine shots from the field after a three-point basket by Spencer Laurie had tied the game at 54-54 with 4:18 left.
Drake junior
Brent Heemskerk hit a free throw with 4:00 left to break the 54-54 tie. Senior guard
Adam Emmenecker then blocked a shot by Jusitn Fuehmeyer with 3:16 left and converted a layup to push the score to 57-54.
Emmenecker added a free throw, while Houston contributed four free throws and junior
Jonathan Cox a basket allowing Drake to snap a 10-game losing streak to Missouri State.
Korver, who had made three of his last 12 shots in the last two games (including 0-for-7 from three-point range), hit seven of 10 shots from the floor, including five three-point baskets.
Cox added 13 points, six rebounds and two steals, while tying a career high with three blocked shots.
Emmenecker finished with nine points, six assists, one blocked shot and two steals.
Drake made 10 three-point baskets with Cox and Houston each making two treys.
Trailing 30-28 at halftime, Drake opened the second period scoring eight unanswered points to grab a 36-30 lead.
Drake shot 40.8 percent from the floor, making 20 of 49 shots.
'DOG TAGS: Drake bettered the previous school winning streak set by the 1968-69 team which reeled off 12 straight wins from Feb. 1,1969 until the semifinal round of the NCAA Final Four when it lost to eventual national champion UCLA, 85-82, March 20, 1969 in Louisville, Ky.
This also marked the first time since the 1969-70 season that Drake has opened the MVC campaign with a 5-0 record. The 1969-70 team enjoyed a 9-0 league start en route to winning the MVC title with a 14-2 mark.
It also marked Drake's 12th straight home victory - the longest winning streak in the 15-year history of the Knapp Center. It also is the third longest in school history trailing winning streaks of 18 from 1962-64 and 23 from 1969-71.
