Mike Carey First Black Super Bowl Ref

By DAVE GOLDBERG – 2 hours ago

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Mike Carey will become the first black referee in Super Bowl history.

Carey, in his 18th year as an official, was notified by the NFL office this week he had the assignment for the Feb. 3 game in Glendale, Ariz. The NFL will not officially announce the assignments until the week of the Super Bowl.

Super Bowl officials are chosen on merit, with the highest ranked at each position getting the assignment. Carey, who runs a skiing accessories company, has been among the NFL's top crew chiefs for a decade and has been a Super Bowl alternate, but has never been the referee.

Black officials have been increasing in number over the years. This season there were 26 on the 17 crews, a single-season high.

They also have been well-represented in the Super Bowl at other officiating spots. Among them was Burl Toler, a former player who worked several early games.

Good choice for Referee...

Carey was the referee during a 2006 playoff game between the Bucs and Redskins, who rightfully ejected the late Redskins safety Sean Taylor after Taylor spit in the face of Bucs running back Michael Pittman.

I watched a game recently and came away not really impressed by a member of his crew though. I can't put my finger on the exact details. I just hope thay don't get flag happy and ruin the Super Bowl no matter who is playing in it.

Mike Carey's crew consists Dan Ferrell, Kent Payne, Mark Perlman, Buddy Horton, Tom Fincken, and Bill Schmitz.

I am pretty sure it is Perlman who is the dipshit, he was the line judge in The Super Bowl two years ago when the Steelers beat the Seahawks in a game that really gave NFL officiating a bad name.

It was Pearlman who called the penalty against Seattle right tackle Sean Locklear for holding Pittsburgh linebacker Clark Haggans nullifing a Seattle 1st down on the Pittsburg 1 yard line early in the 4th qtr when the game was still on the line. To this day fans still call it the "phantom hold.

As everyone knows that was just one of a series of calls that went against the Seahawks that day (4 major calls).

Mike Holmgren later would comment "We knew it was going to be tough going against the Pittsburgh Steelers. I didn't know we were going to have to play the guys in the striped shirts as well."

The Steelers had no penalties called against them at all in the second half of that game..

But who knows..

Funny thing about when Holmgren knocked the officials which is clearly breaking NFL rules,he was not fined ,repremanded or anything.

The NFL just wanted that game to go away as fining him would of prlonged the sports talk fires another week or so.

Of course it;s always the smaller market teams getting the big dick or so it seems!

Great clip there. One of the best calls I've seen in a while. Love when the Redskin guy goes "oh, oh, oh, ok".

Eddie and Carey ae the best two by faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar. Whenever I flick on a game and see either one of these two I usually know Im gonna get a fair wel lcalled game. Thee are about 2-3 refs in the league that always seem to be involved in the fishy called games too. Ed and Mike arent either of them. Congrats Mike.

I like Mike too. Seems very intelligent. He reminds me of the VP at the company where I work now.

The only thing I don't like about Mike is that he tends to get overly dramatic in his mannerisms when explaining a call when the camera is on him. But that is nothing really to complain about.

I am trying to find where Pearlman sells his picks ... does he have his own website?

He must be doing pretty well on his NFL picks.

I see you whiners still can't accept the fact you were on wrong side of that Super Bowl. No flags on Steelers because they committed none to call never enters into your slanted views. Phanton h:nopityA:old my ass..It was holding clear as day. The travesty was that Hawks were even in the Super Bowl as they would have ranked behind Bengals, Colts and Broncos who all were beat on the road prior to their SB Victory. Seabags nothing but pretenders from a patheticallyh weak division(just like this year) and were exposed as such.

I said it was my fault ... and I take responsibility ... I forgot to take the refs into account.
