It seems to me most people dont love or hate the Patriots. You will always have people love/hate you when you are the best at something. It comes with the territory but it seems like the Patriots dont have that as much as most great teams do.

It's usually love them or hate them when it comes to teams of this magnatuide (sp). But with the Patriots it seems more like everyone has no feelings either way with them.

Now I must add this is just an observation from talking to locals in my neck of the woods (Michigan) and the Tom Brady went to Michigan factor does come into play here so maybe the hatred is not nearly as high here but I also dont see or hear the "I love the Patriots" cry either like I did with the Cowboys, Steelers, 49ers teams of the past.

The Pats play 4th fiddle in their own city to the Celts, Bosox, and Bruins.

Well if people lie in polls the Pats are more popular than the Red Sox.Tom Brady is thee most popular player in Boston sports.

Right now all of New England is Patriot happy and most could careless about the in season Celtics and Bruins at least until after The Super Bowl.

It's funny how I can remember so many names from past great teams of the 70s and 80s but can barely name a few players on todays's teams. Maybe I'm just getting senile.

For some reason I think people dislike the people in Boston and not really the Patriots or any pro team. This is my observation only..

No way. Bruins are a joke and have been and are a clear number 4. Patriots way up like #2 with the Red Sox #1. Things change when teams win and Boston will always be a baseball town first but Patriots are way way up on this list and number 2...locked and loaded. Patriots are HUGE here!

Fair enough. But I would characterise them as being 1 and 1A.

Celts and Bruins are a distant 3rd and the Bruins are almost off the map.

Back when both teams sucked they use to call the Pats as the Red Sox in shoulder pads.

I dont think so at all...if anything there is no great widespread hate for NE compared to other dynasties (like the Yankees for example)...and the love I think there is some of that just for this record if they were 16-1 now it would be just like a great Bears team or SF team ...the love is for seeing a chance at history again. plus its easy to like the players they dont have many of the jackass types...

Fans and gamblers.

Confined to the small world here at The Rx. I really believe that many posters don't like certain teams because other posters are so proud of them. Root for your favorite team and you are immediately branded a homer and it is much worse if that team does well (who could do better than the Patriots right now).

For some reason posters rooting for their teams causes other posters to actually root against that team not becasue of the team itself but becasue they want to see a certain poster or several posters humilated by seeing their team losing big games.

Natrually this is most prominent with the Yankees Vs Red Sox rivalry and has spread to the Colts vs Pats and now pretty much the Pats vs the entire NFL rivalry. Instead of wanting to see history be made during their time they want to see Pat Patriot and his co-Patfans eat crow.

I used to actually find myself doing this but have made a conscience effort to stop. These days sure I dislike the main rivals of the teams I have been rooting for over the last 50 years but I don't hate or dislike a team for example like LSU or the St Louis Cardinals just because they have some vocal poster/fans that post on this forum bragging about them.

Regarding the Super Bowl - my two favorite teams are playing each other but natrually The Patriots are going to be the team I root for (I grew up about 20 miles from Foxboro).

However when it comes to gambling I have no favorite teams and will bet against my personal favorite in a heartbeat if I think that is the right side. In fact yesterday I bet the Charger's WR Vincent Jackson's first reception would be over 10.5 yards (see props thread from yesterday) which meant I was in a sense betting my beloved Pats would give up a big play for me to win. (I won on a 15 yard strike over the middle from Rivers to Jackson in the 2nd quarter)..

Bottom line is many of us are sports fans as well as gamblers and would do well to keep the two indulgences separate.

I hope IF the Pats do win the super bowl some of their detractors (you know who you are) will have the class to congratulate them for doing the unprecedented - going 19-0 and running the table..

All in all the hate a team because another poster likes them is a slightly wierd internet created phenomenon..

Nice post Wil.

What people don't apreciate but will twenty years from now that I see now is historical greatness that is reserved for true greatness like Mohamed Ali,Secratariat,Tiger Woods,Yankees of the 20's.
Right now people see the Pats up close and see imperfections kind of like Angelina Jolie has a smudge on her make up or a hair out of place.
Now they bitch becuase the Patriots don't win vs a playoff team with two touchdown head start before the ball is kicked.
But its true.Teams now have the "blueprint" to beat a double digit spread.
This is the only team in the history of the NFL that has started a season 18-0.Since the Pats played Dallas they hve been playing a 7th game.Taking everyones best game week in and week out.

If they can pull off what use to be called laughable and impossible will be one of the top sports stories in our liftimes. If your not saying it now you will be 20 years from now.

Pat, I think post 11 is referring to you. I think everyone knows the Patriots are great, its that you start 3-5 threads is the main forum every week since about Week 4 of the regular season reminding everyone about it.

And yes, I will have the Giants large in the SB. As long as free money is there for the taking, I will be there. Also have the ML +1200 prop before the GB game on the Giants winning the SB. My bet isn't against NE, it is for NYG. Many people are starting to realize the roll they are on, and they played the Pats even last month.

Thats bullshit I don't start 3-5 threads a week talking about them specifically.I'll get into threads that are talking about them.Like this one.
I can't help that if the converstion comes up about playoffs, perfection, super bowls, greatest teams etc. The Pats happen to be part of that. When subjects like that come up you just don't think of the Ravens or Falcons or Jets.

I think it means more to the fans of NE than anyone else. The only time I think about the Bulls and their 72 wins is when 5Star brings it up. I won't be looking back after 10 or 20years and thinking about the pats season. It's just sports, most people have real lives.

Most people didn't even remember the 72' Dolphins until the Pats started to look like they might go undefeated. I bet most people born after 1969 do not even know which players were even on the team that year myself included.

Pats deserve the win but I will remember watching the Pats lose to the Giants and Eli Manning a lot longer if the Pats get shut down..............

It is not that people have real lives (though it is true)...I believe it is the fact that how can you compare different sports?? Silly. Or different eras? Silly. Can't compare that stuff. Perfect season will always be perfect though. One big game away. And that is all.
