They put the # 1 and # 3 in the same bracket.

It should be the 1 and 4 in the same one. And the 2 and 3 in the other.

Federer has to beat the 3 and 2 seeds to win the tourney.

I certainly agree with you, but with Federer in the tournament, it really doesn't matter how they seed the thing. The results will be the same.

they make sense

they don't "put" 1 and 3 in the same half. they draw between 3 and 4 which one goes in the upper and lower half. that way it's randomly decided. same thing goes for 5-8 seeds, they are randomly assigned to each quarter. further seeds follow after that. therefore, one cannot say that 1 will def play 4 in semis and 2 will play 3 even before the draw comes out.

that may be the explanation, but that doesn't mean it makes sense. If 1 plays 3, then 3 is effectively a 4. What the hell is the point of seeding if you aren't going to follow the seeds?

so you would rather decide who gets to play who before the tournament draw comes out as opposed to having a somewhat random variation?

the only guaranteed seeds are 1 to be at the top and 2 to be at the bottom. i dont know about other sports, but i doubt other seeds are assigned beforehand in those draws either.

I guess the problem is that 1,2 and 3 are so much better than everyone else. It seems odd for #1 to have to beat #2 and #3.

well, the decisions are made before the NCAA basketball tournament (and to my knowledge, every other NCAA tournament) and the NBA playoffs. They are also made before the NHL playoffs, although they reseed after each round. In fact, I don't know of any other sporting event that seeds teams or players and then disregards them when it selects the matchups. The point of seeding is to, in theory, give each player a draw representative of their seeding. That means that, if form holds, the #1 player would always play the lowest seeded remaining player, #2 would always play the second lowest. As tennis seeds it, that doesn't happen.

If they wanted to seed after each round like the NHL, that would make sense (although tennis often has players playing different rounds at the same time due to weather and timing, so that isn't really feasible). In effect, they don't seed at all, they simply group similarly rated players together and then randomly select out of a group. 3 and 4 being the first group, presumably 5-8 being a group, 9-16, 17-32. If there is a 32 player tournament and 1 plays 17, 9, 5 and 3, he isn't really seeded as the number one ranked player.

the problem in tennis is that if 1 would always have 4 and 2 would always have 3, pretty much all major tournaments would have the same draw as far as top seeds go. for example now it would always be fed vs davydenko and nadal vs djokovic, as the top 4 does not change very often.

and while saying that 1 has to beat 2 and 3 in this tourney is correct, it is not correct for other tourneys. in each tourney 1 has to beat 2 and 3 or 4, as they are randomly picked to each half.

Doesn't each individual tournament modify the world rankings to their choosing? I.e., Nadal owns clay courts so he may be the #1 seed even though he is #2 in the world. or, in Sampras' day he would be knocked down a peg or two b/c he struggled on clay.

No, I think only Wimbledon does that but not the other tournies. Despite the fact that Nadal is a big favorite at the French he will be seeded 2.

on one hand i think the seeding is a little goofy , on the other hand i'm gonna love watching federer play djokovic and then nadal if it plays out that way.

tennis majors take no back seat to any other major sporting event.
