What's the best way to get the cheapest last minute airfare?

Airlines do not have bereavement fares anymore, do they? I may have to take an emergency flight for some unpleasant family business in the next few days.
Searched a few sites and the prices were about 3-4 times what I normally pay.
Is there any site or any tips to get a more reasonable fare on very short notice.

I think they do have bereavment fares, you'd probably have to call and ask. I think customer service for major airlines is open 24 hours....

they have them, you have to call. they dont advertise it. like chutes info, I have heard the same thing, it might be double what you should pay instead of 3-4 times.

that may not seem like a great deal but thats partially due to people taking advantage. delta has a record of some woman who claimed her mom died 6 times to get last minute fare discounts

Call about bereavement fares

Try kayak or orbitz - make sure to check the close by airports box... Often you can land 30 minutes away for half price

When all else fails, if you have them, use frequent flyer miles. I needed to fly from Vail to NYC and then to CHicago today. Price was like $1200. I managed to book it with a direct to NYC and then a return through Chicago on miles for 25k miles. Just wont take luggage and get off in Chicago...
