I was wondering if anybody knows of any health insurance out there for folks who are not employed by big companies or who are self employed or unemployed.

My girlfriend lives with me and she stays at home with her 3yr old son. She does not have an 8-5 job. She has health insurace through Assurant health. This has got to be the biggest joke of an insurance company ever. Long story short, she's had them since like August. She pays like $250/mo. She has a Dr's visit recently (her first since with this company) and they make her go through an unbelievable amount of trouble and paperwork just to be elegible for them to pay. She does all the paperwork and gets all the bullshit required from the doctor and then they come back and say they will pay $300 of the $1100 bill. There was nothing wierd about the Dr visit I might add, just a routine dr visit.

I'm like why the fuck do you even have the insurance? You are still paying over 70% of the bill.

I know they can't all be like this. Anybody know of a good insurance company to use?

I have and love Blue Cross, but I have it through my company. State farm does my auto and home and he is the one who hooked me up with assurant for her.

I was told that Blue cross is not an option if you don't get it through your job. Is this not true.

that sucks man, hate to hear stuff like that.

best advice I can give is to do some research, call up the other places and talk to them about how things work, the process, etc.

I have American Republic and I love it, I only pay $167 a month.

I went to have my knee checked out about 6 months ago, and out of an $800+ bill, I had to pay about 10%.

The wonders of a free-market, insurance based health care system.

The US must be really fiscally responsible. I assume you guys don't run any deficit.:103631605

Imagine the deficit if American politicians actually cared about the lower 3rd of its citizens.:missingte

That is not true you can get blue cross health insurance through alfa or one of the other insurance companies just call and check around your town. Just look under the yellow pages in the insurance section I know for a fact that Alfa has it.

Overall I think the Canadian system is the right one.

Although, the Canadian Health Care system isn't perfect, when I get sick I don't have to worry about compromising my savings or my future because I can't afford treatment or my insurance company won't cover a particular treatment. Although wait times may be somewhat longer for some specialized procedures, everyone can and will receive what they need regardless of income.

If I was American I would be most offended by comments from Bush, Romney, etc., that suggest more people will receive health care by opening up the private, "free-market", system further.

The bottom line is some people will always require health care treatment they can't pay for and no insurance company will be willing to cover. If its not profitable for an insurance company, its not gonna happen.

Call it what you will, but "socialized medicine" is the most effective, ethical means by which a country can ensure health care for its citizens.

make an honest woman out of her.

seriously though...many people in a similar position put the kids in daycare and get a job that barely pays for the daycare just to get the health insurance. With the kid being close to school age, it would be good to get him in a classroom setting with other kids.

IMO, she really needs to get a job.

I pay $220 a month ($440 every 2 month bill) for Blue Cross. Went thru the same bullcrap as her where I would go to the DR and would be more or less laughed at for the service I used. Find a guy who can sell a package to you, call me and maybe I can steer you to someone I know but not sure how that works in other states.

Stink thats the biz im in.

I can tell you this. If she has any pre exsisting conditions, even small ones, its going to be a bizatch to get stuff paid by any individual company.

Now if you are just talking about the minor stuff, like a cold or flu it should be paid no problem if you have the copay.

I can tell you this Assurant sucks. We wont even right it. Stay away from mega health as well.

Blue Cross does right individual but not sure about your area and they are tough on underwriting.

Check Humana and Golden Rule. Good carriers. If you need some help hit me up.

Quoting what you pay is not worth much. She is a female which means her insurance will be higher. The deductable and copay will have a major impact on premiums. She should definitely shop around but if you think she is going to pay less in premiums I would be surprised.

Don't companies exist that will do the legwork for you? I hear them on the radio here all the time.

My Blue Cross comes directly from Blue Cross with no middle men, agents, brokers, or whatever. I have had it for 15 years, so I may have been grandfathered in. You should definitely contact Blue Cross directly, without using an insurance agent, and see what they can do. Just call Blue Cross and see what insurance they offer for the self employed.
You don't need an agent getting in your pocket for something you can buy yourself.
