From USA Today's Bob Nightengale (1/29): "The New York Mets have agreed to a trade for two-time Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana, giving up four prospects to acquire the left-handed ace of the Minnesota Twins, according to two high-ranking Twins officials with knowledge of the talks and a person close to Santana. The deal is pending the Mets and Santana reaching agreement on a six- or seven-year contract extension and that Santana passes a physical."

GREAT move by the Mets.

I believe that the Yanks and Sox both offered stronger deals then NYM.

The package the Mets are going to surrender is Carlos Gomez, Deolis Guerra, Kevin Mulvey and Phil Humber. The Twins had initially told the Mets that there would be no trade without Reyes being included.

A bunch of complete unknowns with no big league experience. Minnesota should have grabbed Reyes from the Mets at least. I think they should have gotten more for such a top tier pitcher.
Gomez is obviously the gem for the twins here...I dont think much of Humber but twins had to get something, and they knew the yanks were pulling hughes out of any deal

Funny how the Bosox/ Yankees prospects get battered with "hot prospect" tags and the Mets get thrown by the way side.

Just so you guys know...

Gomez is projected to be better than Ellsbury,
Guerra is projected as a huge stud in time (3-4 years, hes very young)
Mulvey is getting great buzz after a great season at AA.
Humber is a piece of work.

The mets offered the best deal.

Twins probably see themselves as a contender so they wanted to get him out of the AL. Makes sense.

Captain i do agree on Gomez, and also very good point about guerra

I'm a huge Mets fan and apparently the only one other than yourself who realizes we gave up a great deal to get someone for one year. I think everyone is forgetting Santana is going to cost A TON of money over the next 5-6 years PLUS the prospects.

The case wasn't the same for Bedard or Haren and that's why they cost significantly more.

But the Mets Farmhands usually don't pan out compared to other teams. I think they're ranked just behind the Astros in producing the least major league talent in the last ten years.

Very true. Santana is good to pitch another 6 or 7 years if he stays healthy and be the end of that contract that's gonna cost the Mets A LOT of money. If they win a couple world series between now and then, then it was all worth it.
