I've had this pain/strain in one side of my lower back off and on for the past couple years. I strained it this morning moving some furniture and it's very annoying. The pain is located about 2-3" to the left of the spinal column right about where the pointy top part of your hip bone is. It hurts when I twist my trunk or when I sit down, lean forward and then try to straighten up. What is this injury and what preventative exercises should I do?

It is most likely a bulged or (hopefully not) herniated disc. Do not lift anything you do not plan on eating or drinking. Ice, anti inflammatory pills. Get a inversion table so you can tilt back and allow the disc to reallign and the herniation will hopefully recede back into place. When it feels better lose your gut and replace with ab muscles.

I'm 5'-11" and about 170 lbs. No gut on me although I haven't been doing my crunches in ages.

Is the pain of a herniated disk away from the spinal column?

Sciatic nerve. Get on some kind of anti-inflamatory drug and when the pain subsides, start working those abs and hamstrings.

Herniated disc pinches nerves that can hurt all over back and down your legs. Chiropractor made my pain worse.

See your doctor and have an X-Ray to determine if the pain is skeletal or muscular. You need to know what is causing the pain before trying to treat it. If it is muscular, there are back stretching exercises that you can be taught by physical therapy. If it is skeletal, then you may need medication plus you may need an MRI to detemine the extent of any damage. Don't mess with a chiropractor when you don't know the cause. Find out first. I've had the identical problem in the same lower back location since an injury in 1989 and the pain severity comes and goes at times.

Sounds like it. i have had the same thing several times, most recently lifting my dog into my truck. Massage therapy works (not a rub and tug) a hot tub is also good. When you feel better start stretching more, and strenghten your abs.

Go see an orthopedic specialist ASAP you might also consider Acupuncture for pain management. Rest and get a warm bath with epsom salts.
Take it easy for a few days and if the pain does not subside get to a Dr.
Believe me I know your Pain well.

This is great very true.
If not for you then use Aleve and Ibuprofin together.
600 -1000 milligrams of Aleve and 400- 800 mg Ibuprofin be sure to eat and drink plenty of water.
That is what the doctors had me taking and it worked well for me.

You could have a fracture of the spine or a tumor pressing on the spine. Either could cause back pain. You really should get an MRI to determine the caue of the pain.

Chiropractors are a scam, believe me. They help you but you have to go back to them every 2 weeks? Bullshit. Also, if it is a lower back injury chiropractors aren't even suspose to work on you, they are only suspose to deal with mid to upper back.
