<!-- end page tools --><!-- begin story body --><!-- template inline -->For the price, this is a terriffic pickup by the Bosox if Casey is relatively healthy.........great guy for the clubhouse and I feel he should hit extremely well at Fenway Park, as he hits many line drives to the opposite field and should tatoo the Green Monster numerous times.

BOSTON -- Free agent first baseman Sean Casey has reached an agreement a one-year, $700,000 contract with the Boston Red Sox, ESPN's Peter Gammons reports.
Friday's deal was made pending a physical. Casey will give the Red Sox an experienced backup at first to starter Kevin Youkilis.
Casey, whose contract is not guaranteed, hit .296 with four homers, 30 doubles and 54 RBIs in 143 games for the Detroit Tigers last season. In 11 seasons, eight with Cincinnati, the left-handed hitter batted .301 with 130 homers and 718 RBIs.

No exactly a blockbuster move but I am glad to see it happen..

Dosen't hurt to have a veteran back-up first baseman, especially one with a left hnded bat..Minor pick up for the Red Sox but word is Casey is a popular player. Teamates and opponets alike call Casey "The Mayor" because of his reputation for chatting casually with every runner who makes it to first base, and from his very public charity work.

Sean Casey has made the sports news for his charitable work almost as often as his play on the baseball diamond. He has been active in Big Brothers and Make-A-Wish Foundation, as well as the "Casey's Crew" program, where he provided free high-priced tickets to disadvantaged youth.

Sure he is slow on the bases but what else is new in Boston. I hope he becomes a fixture with The Sox for a few years..With a name like Sean Casey he is already ahead of the game in many areas of Boston..

He won't kill you. Good glove with limited range. Not much pop in the bat but the Red Sox didn't sign him for that. He was a nice addition for the Tigers. But there's just no room for him here now.

I must have read 10 articles in the local papers last year about how great of a guy he is. Really came across that way in interviews I seen also. Looks like he is an excellent teammate.

It was a little frustating that he was somewhat of a bigger player and had little to no power and he is one of the slowest guys you will see on a baseball field.

Excellent singles and doubles hitter. Great guy to have on the team but it's hard to count on him being healthy all season.

Casey won't even get on the field. Remember J.T. Snow two years ago? Casey's more likely to get cut in spring training than he is to make any meaningful contribution. He better hope Youk gets in a car accident, because other than an injury to Youk, Casey's not getting any ABs.

Sean Casey is also a lifetime .300 hitter. He hit .296 last year in 453 ABs for The Tigers..

Actually he may get more at bats than many anticipate as Youkilis can spell an aging Mike Lowell at third occasionally leaving 1st base open to Casey when that occurs. Plus he will probably be the top lefty pinch hitter available to Terry Francona. The player who should be worried is Eric Hinske and his .204 average with just 6 homers in 186 at bats in 2007 as a back up 1st baseman and left handed PH.
