Heard off ND's home station here that it will be announced tomorrow that ND foots ended up with the top recruiting class in the nation. This coming off what might have been the worst season ever for the Golden Domers.

Also

He gave a lot of kids a lot of playing time this year in all those beat downs. They will be better for that next year.

Surprised this didn't get more attention outside of South Bend. This is a great move.

<!-- end page tools --><!-- begin story body --> <!-- template inline -->SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Jon Tenuta, defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech the past six seasons, joined Notre Dame's staff Thursday as assistant head coach for defense.
Tenuta, who replaces Bill Lewis, will work with defensive coordinator Corwin Brown to try to improve a unit that finished 39th in the nation in total defense, giving up 357 yards a game as the Fighting Irish finished 3-9. It was the best performance by the Irish defense since 2003.
"Corwin and Jon had numerous conversations on how they would work together and they both agreed this would be a great fit," Irish coach Charlie Weis said in a statement released Thursday evening.
Georgia Tech finished 20th in the nation in defense last season, giving up 330 yards a game. The Yellow Jackets led the nation in sacks with 48, including nine in a season-opening 33-3 win over Notre Dame. It was the worst season-opening loss in Notre Dame history as the Yellow Jackets held the Irish to 122 yards total offense.
Tenuta's defenses are known for their aggressive, blitzing style, and Weis had talked each of the past two seasons before Notre Dame's games against Georgia Tech about how much he admired Tenuta.
"Jon's track record speaks for itself. He is a coach with an immense amount of defensive knowledge and will undoubtedly help our program," Weis said.
Tenuta said he was looking forward to working with Weis and Brown.
"It's an opportunity to coach at one of the greatest traditional powerhouse programs in college football and to work with one of the brightest minds in the game," he said. "I love coaching defense and Corwin is a very bright young coach who has a bright future ahead of him.
"My main goal is to do whatever I can to help the defense become the best in the country and help return Notre Dame to where it belongs," he said.
Tenuta had been a candidate to replace Chan Gailey at Georgia Tech after he was fired but left the school after Paul Johnson was hired as coach. Tenuta served as interim coach for Georgia Tech in a 40-28 loss to Fresno State in the Roady's Humanitarian Bowl.
Tenuta starts Feb. 18.
Lewis will have one hip replaced on Feb. 8 and the other in May. Lewis said he initially planned to try to stay on as coach.
"The more I thought about it, though, I thought this was a selfish plan," he said.
Lewis was an assistant head coach for defense at Notre Dame the past three years as well as defensive backs coach. He will remain at Notre Dame as manager of athletics community relations.

This is not accurate. Most people consider them the 2nd or 3rd best class overall, and they will only go down from that spot, as they are not expected to have many late signees, who could boost their lofty perch.

Tenuta is a GREAT hire. As an ACC person, I am glad to see Tech no longer has him.

Yup. That guy can coach some fuckin defense.

Weis can recruit, but it remains to be seen if he can develop the talent he brings in.

Pretty much splitting hairs when you rank recruiting classes, best, 2nd best, 3rd best etc...

No one knows until the class actually plays on the field for a few years.

Similar to NFL drafts in that manner.

Doesn't really matter where it ranks. What can he do with it and how long will it take to be successful? That is where the rubber meets the road. Lose long enough and those rankings don't mean anything.

Last year, critics wondered if Illinois' Ron Zook could coach as well as he could recruit. So after struggling at 2-9 and 2-10 in his first two seasons in Champaign, he responded by taking the 9-4 Illini to the Rose Bowl.
In the wake of last year's 3-9 disaster, critics are asking the same question about Notre Dame's Charlie Weis. After wooing three outstanding freshman classes to South Bend, he is expected to produce a winner in 2008.
Weis can't complain about the talent he has to work with. On Wednesday, he will sign what projects as one of the top four classes in the country. It features 11 of CSTV recruiting analyst Tom Lemming's top 100 prospects, including three from the Chicago area.
''Notre Dame has the No. 1 class in the nation right now,'' Lemming said. ''But they probably will drop to 2, 3 or 4 on Wednesday. Why? Because they got only two players in the last two months and lost one. Other schools will catch up with more commitments and talent.
''But this class is sure to get Notre Dame back to the BCS. It is a great class for a team that was 3-9 last season. Wide receiver Michael Floyd is their best recruit. He should be to Notre Dame what Arrelious Benn was to Illinois. And quarterback Dayne Crist will contend for the starting job.''
Several uncommitted players could make a significant impact on signing day. Quarterback Terrelle Pryor, the nation's top-rated senior, is expected to choose Ohio State or Michigan. If he opts for Ohio State, the Buckeyes could vault to the No. 1 class.
Here's Lemming's current top 10:
1 | Notre Dame: Floyd and Crist head a class that also features Kyle Rudolph, the nation's best tight end; a talented crop of offensive linemen, led by Trevor Robinson; and a pair of outstanding linebackers in Mount Carmel's Steve Filer and St. Rita's Darius Fleming. The Irish could add running back Milton Knox from Louisiana and defensive end Keith Wells from Georgia.
2 | Alabama: Coach Nick Saban has 26 commitments, more than anyone else, and three top-100 players: offensive lineman Tyler Love and wide receivers Burton Scott and Melvin Ray. Other standouts are quarterback Star Jackson of Lake Worth, Fla., and wide receiver Mark Barron of Mobile, Ala. If the Tide gets wide receiver Julio Jones, the nation's No. 3 player, it could move to the top spot.
3 | Florida: The Gators have seven top-100 players: defensive backs Will Hill and Dee Finley, linebackers Brendon Beal and Ramon Buchanan and linemen Omar Hunter, Matt Patchan and William Green. They were helped by three decommitments -- two from Miami and one (Hunter) from Notre Dame. Linebacker Lerentee McCray from Dunnellon, Fla., is another standout.
4 | Ohio State: The Buckeyes have eight top-100 players, led by Mike Adams, the nation's best offensive lineman, and Lamaar Thomas, one of the country's most exciting running backs. Linemen Mike Brewster, J.B. Shugarts and Montini's Garrett Goebel, linebacker Etienne Sabino and wide receivers Jake Stoneburner and DeVier Posey round out a stellar class -- even without Pryor.
5 | Oklahoma: If the Sooners get Julio Jones, they will move up. They have seven top-100 players, including Jermie Calhoun, Lemming's second-ranked running back. Linemen R.J. Washington, Stephen Good and David Snow, quarterback Landry Jones, running back Justin Johnson and wide receiver Jameel Owens are the others. But will Calhoun be an academic qualifier?
6 | Georgia: The Bulldogs have 25 commitments, including three of Lemming's top 100: wide receiver A.J. Green and linemen DeAngelo Tyson and A.J. Harmon. They also got tight end Dwayne Allen of Fayetteville, N.C., and a sleeper in defensive end Cornelius Washington of Waynesboro, Ga., who missed his junior year but runs 100 meters in 10.8 seconds.
7 | Texas: Coach Mack Brown completed most of his recruiting last spring, though the Longhorns might land the nation's top running back, Darrell Scott, who also is considering Colorado. Brown has three top-100 players: defensive backs Nolan Brewster (son of Minnesota coach Tim Brewster) and Aaron Williams and wide receiver Dan Buckner. Others to watch are wide receiver DeSean Hales of Spring, Texas, and cornerback Donald Monroe of Angleton, Texas.
8 | Miami: The Hurricanes were ranked No. 2 most of the year but lost three top defensive players in the last month, one to LSU and two to Florida. They have four top-100 players -- defensive lineman Marcus Forston, linebackers Arthur Brown and Marcus Robinson and wide receiver Aldarius Johnson -- and still have an outstanding group of defensive players.
9 | Florida State: The Seminoles' class is headed by three top-100 players -- quarterback E.J. Manuel and linebackers Nigel Bradham and Nigel Carr -- and also includes defensive back A.J. Alexander of Altoona, Pa., and linebackers Vincent Williams of Davenport, Fla., and Nick Moody of Philadelphia.
10 | USC: The Trojans have only 16 commitments, fewer than anyone else in the top 10, but it is a superior class with five top-100 players -- offensive linemen Matt Kalil and Tyrone Smith, wide receivers D.J. Shumate and Brice Butler and tight end Blake Ayles -- plus linemen Dan Campbell, Matt Meyer and Khaled Holmes.
Next 15: Michigan, Clemson, Texas A&M, LSU, Illinois, UCLA, Auburn, Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh, Minnesota, Washington, Oklahoma State, Arizona State, Missouri, Colorado.
