Accidental Pill Overdose Killed Ledger

Heath Ledger died of an accidental overdose of painkillers, sleeping pills, anti-anxiety medication and other prescription drugs, the New York City medical examiner said Wednesday.
The cause of death was "acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam and doxylamine," spokeswoman Ellen Borakove said in a statement. The drugs are the generic names for the painkiller OxyContin, the anti-anxiety drugs Valium and Xanax, and the sleep aids Restoril and Unisom. Hydrocodone is a widely used prescription painkiller.
Borakove wouldn't say what concentrations of each drug were found in Ledger's blood, or whether one drug played a greater part than another in causing his death.

"What you're looking at here is the cumulative effects of these medications together," she said.
The ruling comes two weeks after the 28-year-old Australian-born actor was found dead in the bed of his rented SoHo apartment. Police found bottles of six types of prescription drugs, including sleeping pills and anti-anxiety medication, in his bedroom and bathroom.
Ledger was discovered by his masseuse on Jan. 22 after she arrived for an appointment that afternoon. She entered his bedroom to set up for the massage and found him unresponsive, and proceeded to call Mary-Kate Olsen three times over the next 9 minutes before dialing 911. Ledger had been dead for some time, and police say no foul play occurred.
Ledger, nominated for an Oscar for his role in "Brokeback Mountain," had returned to New York from London days before his death, where he had been filming a $30 million Terry Gilliam film. He said in a November interview that his most recent completed roles in the Batman movie "The Dark Night" and Bob Dylan biopic "I'm Not There" had taken a toll, saying he couldn't sleep.
"Last week I probably slept an average of two hours a night," Ledger told The New York Times. "I couldn't stop thinking. My body was exhausted, and my mind was still going." He said he had taken two Ambien pills, which only gave him an hour of sleep.
Ledger's family returned to the actor's hometown of Perth, Australia on Tuesday to prepare for his funeral. Arrangements were private.
In a statement released through Ledger's publicist, Ledger's father, Kim, said Wednesday: "While no medications were taken in excess, we learned today the combination of doctor-prescribed drugs proved lethal for our boy. Heath's accidental death serves as a caution to the hidden dangers of combining prescription medication, even at low dosage."

My god...........These are some of the hardest downers and painkillers one can take. Obviously the guy knew his meds so how could he not know the outcome of mixing them all without giving them time to exit his system. I am surprised the law isn't looking for the source of all these meds....

bullshit, he knew exactly what he was doing. overdose is overdose, and given the combination of drugs he's been taking, he must've been heavily hooked.
he was prob so high, he had no idea anymore what he was taking.

Why is it that an accidental overdose only occurs to celebs? Do they expect us to believe they are really that stupid.

That's what I was thinking. That's a hell of a combo of some hardcore drugs.

Agreed and this increases the sad, but very likely conclusion that Ledger knowingly committed suicide.

Not likely if he was a regular and chronic user of opiods.

Steady use of opiod drugs builds a strong tolerance in the brain so that "getting high" is not really pertinent to use.

I stick with the supposition that he knowingly ingested this level of dosage as a means to kill himself without "pain". (ie gunshot or bridge jump, etc)

How do they compare to Tylenol 3 with codeine for painkilling effect?

they would be about an "A" cup compared to the girl in your avatar. i agree that suicide was his likely intent and he managed to go out painlessly.

He was reefering to the Tylenol III as the "Acup"

Tylenol 3 is if I remember correctly, about 2% codeine and 98% acetimenophen (tylenol)

my comparison was missunderstood, he was taking the good shit, knew what he had and decided he was probably ready to end it.

he was hooked. he was crushing up oxy and snorting it to get instant buzz effect. thats why they found rolled up 20 on the nightstand. he had been crushing and snorting. depending on the dosage but oxy and morphine give very similar effects when crushed and snorted.

if you've noticed in some of the interviews with him he seemed a bit twitchy, scratched his skin alot, sweating heavily, just a few signs that he was snorting o.c's or percocets. many tell tell signs from the behavior he demonstrated on camera.

just to add o.c. is synthetic heroin, always clean and pure unlike the street variety.

Not exactly.

Oxycontin is simply the brand name for hydrocodone that is in a time release formula.

When crushed and/or broken up, the time release component is removed and the full dosage is assimilated at one time.
