......were a 3 point dog for SB VII vs. the Redskins! Yup! That's right! I should know as by that time I had become an NFL bettor starting with SB III when Joe Willie "guaranteed" a Jets victory. I loved the Dolphins in this game and I didn't know anything about 'traps" and such. But when the line first came out I scratched my head wondering how an unbeaten team could possibly be an underdog for the Super Bowl.

You have to understand that in that era, even though the Jets and then Chiefs won back to back Super Bowls and forced a merger in 1971 I believe, the old NFL still thought they were far superior than their AFL rivals. People just couldn't accept that the AFL opponents had caught up to the NFL and even surpassed them on the field. I think the Dolphins lost to the Cowboys in 1971 the year before they went undefeated. They must have thought that things were going back to "normal" when the Cowboys beat the Dolphins so they made the Skins a fave. At the time I thought that was the easiest money I ever made. Probably had no more than $100 on the game, but at that time I was only making $100 a week. OK! Maybe $150.

if Garo make the field goal they win 17-0 and that would have been ironic

The reason Washington was favored, was simply public perception. Washington had waltzed past Green Bay and Dallas at home and looked unbeatable. Miami on the hand, had rallied at home in the 4th quarter against Cleveland, and pulled out a hard fought ROAD victory(fake punt) against Pittsburgh. Can you imagine in the year 2008, being 18-0 and playing the conference finals on the road? I was in college at the time and took the undefeated Dolphins +3 and got out of a huge trap.

I heard the 72 dolphins had the #1 offense, #1 defense, #1 in everything, 1st dual 1,000 yd rushers, and lots of other things....

If it wasn't for the field goal kicker Garo, it would have been a shut-out...

Was that the play where he tries to throw the ball or whatever and it's gets taken back?

They were #1 in just about every major category ( pts scored/ allowed , Yds gained / allowed ) and #2 in the league in Turnover differential. Their offense was spearheaded by HOF Larry Csongka 1117 yds and Mercury Morris 1000 yds on the nose. As a team the Dolphins rushed for 211 yds per game and passed for 160 more under head helmsmen Earl Morrall. Other than Nick Buonicotti the Defense was actually as it was deemed , "nonamed". However it didnt stop the 72' Fish for forever immortalizing themselves in pigskin glory and lore.17-0 and finished with a win on the big stage. A record that seemed impossible not to be surspassed on the last fateful Sunday we endured. Yet it still stands , and the 72' Fins still raise their glasses with pride and a legacy unsurpassed.

Dolphins were installed as 3 point dogs because of the weak competition they played all season.

Skins were viewed as the superior team at the time.
