A sickening video of New York Mets pitcher Pedro Martinez and legendary Hall of Famer Juan Marichal laughing at a gruesome cockfight in the Dominican Republic was posted -- and then quickly taken off -- YouTube.

Martinez and Marichal, among the best pitchers of all time, are seen grinning before releasing two roosters.

Cockfighting is both legal and popular in the Dominican Republic.
The pair took part as honorary "soltadores" -- the word used to describe the person who throws the animal into the ring.
The bird released by Martinez appears to be killed on the video.
The tape was posted on the popular Web site on Tuesday, and was gone by last night.
"If you're squeamish ... I suggest you don't play the attached video," warned "Richie Rich" of Homerderby.com. The poster did not immediately respond to an e-mail request for comment.
Marichal has raised fighting roosters on his farm in the Dominican Republic, and was once minister of sports there.
Roosters have also reportedly been spotted on Martinez's property in the Caribbean nation.
The event shown in the video takes place in the Coliseo de Gallos -- Rooster Coliseum -- in Santo Domingo, the country's biggest cockfighting venue.
Met spokesman Jay Horwitz refused to comment early today.
A spokesman for Major League Baseball could not immediately be reached.
Marichal, a superstar with the San Francisco Giants in the '60s and '70s -- racked up 2,303 strikeouts; Martinez, who has been with the Mets for the last three years, has notched 3,030.
Marichal has 243 wins, Martinez, 209.
In the 1998 book "Viva Baseball: Latin Americans and their Special Hunger," Marichal is quoted recalling his father's love of the blood sport.
"I don't think my father played baseball," the pitcher said. "But I know that he used to live for the gallos, for cockfighting. I think that's why I've got that in my blood."
The video marks the latest incident involving sports stars involved in animal cruelty. Atlanta Falcon quarterback Michael Vick is serving a 23-month federal sentence and has been indefinitely suspended by the NFL because of a felony conviction on dogfighting charges.

Just a way of life in the DR...attended a few fights during the time I lived there...can't even compare it with what Vick did...but knowing you the way I do Rupert, you will find a way....LOL

It's a way of life and legal down there. It's still messed up IMO but he's not on Vick's level. Pedro threw the chicken in and probably enjoyed the fight in a legal environment. Vick raised dogs and funded a dogfighting operation where it was illegal, and he also killed a bunch of dogs himself in cruel ways (on top of the fighting). Bigtime difference.

Last time I checked Pedro doesnt play for the Dominican Tigers del Licey , He plays for the New York Mets ... He has a responsibility to his fans which include a younger generation where I dont think watching animals ripping each others eyeballs out sets a good example.

I see what you are saying and don't approve cockfighting by any standards, but going along the same line of thinking, if I got paid to play by a Dominican team, would I have a responsibility to the fans to attend **** fights?

If you were Dominican and lived there , You do whatever you want ...Pedro represents MajorLeagueBaseball, he signed a contract for over 100 Million dollars to play in America , thousands of little kids wear his Jersey and thousands more emulate him every time they take the mound from little league to Highscool to American Legion. He has a responsibility as a role model to these kids. A video which comes out on Youtube ( to a potentially 1million + audience ) which shows him enjoying the mutilation of cognitive animals --- I don't feel is a good thing. **** fighting is accepted and legal in the 3rd world country of the Dominican Republic. What's morally correct is up to the individual. Let me just say I don't condone dog OR **** fighting, and I think Vick's sentence was excessive, but there's a big difference between accepted and legal-as in the DR-and accepted and ILlegal, as in the South. I think it's debatable that athletes should be role models to begin with, but I think it's VERY debatable that kids are going to see Pedro at a cockfight (and, btw, I assume that he didn't arrange to have it filmed and wonder if he even knew that was being done) and be greatly influenced by that. As for PETA, they know where to wage their battles, and trying to impose their morals on the people from another country while those people are IN that other country is one that I'm confident they're NOT gonna wage.
