note: any nonsensical answers will be moved to RR. I will start:

forecasting:
Having several outs that offer early lines such as Bookmaker is of fundamental importance. Many books will throw out early numbers and let the sharps set the line, The Greek is also an excellent example. If you have a strong opinion on which way the line will move you are at an excellent advantage. I would suggest that you need to be at least 60% sure the line will move in your favor before you place the bet. This is not an exact science, and from time to time the line may go against your direction, but those who have been in the industry for a long time seem to develop an "additional" sense for this. One way to improve on this and see how you do is to simply write down all the openers, and the predict the closing numbers and see what percentage you can hit. Betting early and getting the best of the line will open up several middle or scalp opportunities or will allow you to enter into the game with the best possible number.

One recent example I can offer from last night is the Kings @ Wings NHL match-up. Pinnacle opened with the Kings @ +350 on the ML for regulation. Despite knowing how good the wings are and how terrible the kings are, this number was obviously high (imo) this is something you really develop a feel for, especially in your favorite sports, in fact, I would bet that I can successfully predict the move in certain games in the NHL and CFL 70% of the time as those are my favorite sports. Now, if you know for a fact that the number will move in your favor (imo) it is a good play to successfully play a unit or 1/2 unit on that game, whether you like the kings or not, you now have "value" on that game.

<table summary="Pending transactions" cellpadding="5" width="100%"><tbody><tr class="AlternatingData2"><td nowrap="nowrap">2:32pm 6-Feb-08</td> <td nowrap="nowrap">7-Feb-08</td> <td>Hockey
Moneyline</td> <td>Los Angeles Kings vs Detroit Red Wings for Game</td> <td align="right" nowrap="nowrap">+350</td> <td align="right" nowrap="nowrap">100.00</td> <td align="right" nowrap="nowrap"> 350.00</td> </tr> <tr id="pitcher1" class=""><td colspan="8" class="AlternatingData2" valign="top">5 - 3
NHL Regulation Time (see rules)</td></tr></tbody></table>

Notice, this wager was placed @ 230pm the day before the game, and the +350 probably lasted for several hours the day before, by game time it was down to about +300 to +320.

Please feel free to further comment of "forecasting" or to add another "element" which is vital to being successful at winning at sports betting.

Sport......they were down 3-1 to start the 3rd period. The chances of you winning that bet were terrible. Needed a 3-0 period. If Wings scored in 3rd you could barely win. I know this is an example of a play but still.

Im not trying to debate wether or not the kings should have bet the redwings or not, I realize they should not have won that game.

the point I am trying to make, is if through "forecasting" the line, you can get the best number the majority of the time, you will come out ahead.

This game opened at 350, went to 356, then settled down between
+300 and +320.

I will almost blindly bet a game, in which I know I am betting the best possible number, especially if it is EARLY rather than late (as was the case in this game).

The forum heads will not like this but to win you need to have locals...even if they have a service

getting bad numbers is easily done with locals...especially totals

why should they not have won that game? shots were about even and they were a huge overaly at +350??? that is the whole point. they were in a situation where the value was +350 and it showed in the BOX score big time that it was the value play...
Detroit scored a fluke goal :40 seconds in .. what can you do so they were down a couple goals so what?

i have not had a local in 7 years. much easier to win off shore where you can get info fast, multiple lines in seconds and get to slow moving lines fast as well. a local cripes you have to get the lines read to, if your not put on hold, takes forever and you lose dozens of online opportunities. I mean sure if you have local that uses the USA today or something that is a DIFFERENT story then all you need is a local... To make more cash drop your local and focus on the lines at your 10+ outs.

My opinion you need to be able to bet without emotion, otherwise you risk betting as a homer and not being objective. A hardcore fan of any team will be able to find a reason to talk himself into betting on his team everytime. It is also tough for that bettor to bet against his team even though it might be the right play. You have to check that emotion at the door.

Also it is imortant to be knowledgeable and be as selective as you can. Study a league or a conference and become an expert. Try and only bet on those games with confidence because you have an educated opinion as to what should happen.

I have learned the hard way that two of the biggest downfalls are poor money management and chasing. I was told over and over again but you don't listen and have to figure it out yourself. Betting 2-3% of your bankroll will never kill you on any game, but over time will add up nicely if you are good at what you do.

When I hear things like "I have this new system that is 69-1 so far this year" I cringe. If you had an unlimited bankroll and no book limits, a chase system would be the greatest idea invented. Just keep doubling until you win, because eventually you will win. However, it is not possible and can lead to a major hit in the bankroll.

This years amazing chase system will likely end up as next years bankroll crushing debacle. An example is the Pizzaman under chase in the hockey forum. Last year it ended up +60 units or so...this year down over 50 at the break. Same system as last year but way different results.

If you are in it for the long haul and want to be successful there is no hurry. Do your homework and make your strong plays within your bankroll. All this is easier said then done, but there are no shortcuts to being a long term successful gambler

I cant think of anything more important than patience and discipline.

The last 2 cash outs I kept betting over my head, but I was so patient waiting for STRONG plays it didnt matter.

Stay away from college hoops.

NCAAB is fun but the money is in the NBA.

Play NBA favorites, good teams facing shitass teams and go out to dinner.

You won;t win them all but the 2-3% of bankroll grind you;ll come out ahead.
