<!-- end page tools --><!-- begin story body --> <!-- template inline -->ANTWERP, Belgium -- Three men were removed by organizers at the Diamond Games after they were found to be gambling via laptops from the stands, a spokeswoman for the event said on Tuesday.
"Three spectators were removed. The two Russians and one German were holding a laptop and logged on to a gambling Web site were gambling on ongoing matches," said spokeswoman Katia Stroobants.
Tennis has been dogged by allegations of match-fixing and illegal gambling in the past year. Several male players have said they were approached to fix matches while betting exchanges have noted irregular patterns.
The spokeswoman said those who were asked to leave the Sportpaleis in Antwerp late on Monday were allegedly "exploiting the delay between the time a point was won and the time it appeared on the official tournament Web site."
A spokeswoman for the WTA tour said the decision to remove the men was taken after consultations with the governing body.
"The WTA takes a zero tolerance approach to this issue," she said. "The men were asked to leave or hand over their laptops and they decided to leave with their computers. Unfortunately we do not have any other powers."
The tournament started on Monday with local favorite Justine Henin leading the field. The world No. 1 begins her quest for the title on Thursday.

I like how they make it look like these guys are part of the Russian gambling fixing syndicate. Are you not allowed to gamble from the stands? Is online gambling illegal in Belgium?

I see nothing wrong with having an advantage because you are watching in real time. Just as I think it is perfectly fine for someone to bet at matchbook and to use the old rabbit ears on the TV so you know the result 1 or 2 seconds before those watching on cable or satellite.

The guys in the stands could just as easily be on the cell with someone betting outside of the courts.

How did they find out.

I mean if I go to a sporting even and sit among thousands of people and peck away at my laptop nobody is going to know (or care) what I'm doing on the laptop. I wonder if this had happened previously and someone from the betting exchanges notified the WTA to be look around for this. Something like that?

yeah that is my guess. They are trying to save the sanctity of their sport. Betfair and Tennis are supposed to be working together to save us from deception

.....Matchbook often has in-game betting on MLB games
