Websites Subpoenaed for Taking Online Gambling Ads <hr style="color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" size="1"> <!-- / icon and title --> <!-- message --> Gambling911.com can report exclusively that websites accepting ads for at least one online gambling venture are now being subpoenaed.

"The subpoena is asking for documents related to the advertising arrangement," one website operator disclosed to Gambling911.com this afternoon.

Gambling911.com was expected to be subpoenaed shortly.

The immediate contents of the subpoena could not be disclosed due to "confidentiality" stipulations.

The matter in question is not directly connected to passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, however, it could place many "support" venues and publishing websites in danger of losing crucial ad revenue. This relates to civil patent suit involving one specific online gambling operator.

In other news, there is a sealed indictment against an online poker operator by the U.S. Government. Gambling911.com reported only two days ago that another individual involved in running an online poker website licensed by Action Poker could be sent back to the U.S. and is facing over 100 years in prison.

"His (the gentleman in Italy) case is a lot more complicated than just gambling," a source tells Gambling911.com.

The sealed indictment in question is not related to the former Action Poker licensee.

Gambling911.com will continue to monitor this development as it transpires

So, when the World Wide Web is redefined as the contiguous 48 + Alaska and Hawaii, we will then be unable to come here.

No, I think even mods are safe. It's the owner(s) that might be targets, much like Bodog's Calvin.

I don't see what is wrong with sites such as this one.

They do not take part in the wagering, they simply assist those of us who are legally wagering on sporting events.

On the same token, the content we post mostly will not hold up. The government can't be dumb enough to think 90% of us all throw $10,000/game on our picks.

The US government has already decided not to debate whether sites like this are legal. They had their chance when Casinocity sued them and rather than have a federal court decide, the government simply said we are not going after websites like that one. If they ever do, it will end up in court.

The government will continue to "fine" yahoo and google, etc type sites since they will not fight (too much public image) but will not go after sites like therx cause the government would likely lose.

Well they do take part in the wagering, in a sense, if they get a portion of losses in exchange for the advertising.

Hopefully Sean is correct.

On the other hand John from SBR recently made a quick exit from forum ownership. Roberto left Miami for the UK....

EOG's shrink would be an easier guy to get, if the gov't were to try and go after site owners. He should be fairly easy to locate.

I don't think the site owners are in danger, yet.

I still don't see very much a course of action against the sites, but imagine at the next Rx bash having the SWAT team repelling down from the ceiling and TTinCO tackling some black suits patrolling! That is what I call a bash!

Fezzik pulled all the ads down at LVA a good while ago, when he was still involved there. RX is the largest of these sites. Watch out if Ken makes a move.

Microsoft, Google, Yahoo pay up in Web-betting case

By William Spain, MarketWatch

Last update: 4:41 p.m. EST Dec. 19, 2007

CHICAGO (MarketWatch) -- Uncle Sam and at least one charity are getting an early Christmas present courtesy of Microsoft Corp., Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc., which have agreed to fork over a combined $31 million to settle claims that they promoted illegal online gambling, a federal prosecutor announced Wednesday.
The three companies have cut a deal with Catherine Hanaway, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri, under which they'll pay up but neither admit nor contest charges that they received advertising money from online-gambling operations.

MSFT has the biggest bill to pay, with a total of $21 million. Of that, $4.5 million will go the government and $7.5 million to the International Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The software giant also will provide a $9 million online public-service advertising campaign aimed at college-level or younger people, pushing the idea that online-gambling enterprises are illegal.
Google is on the hook for $3 million while Yahoo's tab is $7.5 million. The latter already had forfeited $3 million directly to the Treasury and also will provide $4.5 million worth of online advertising over three years for a public-service campaign.
"These sums add to the over $40 million in forfeitures and back taxes this office has already recovered in recent years from operators of these remote-control illegal gambling enterprises," Hanaway said in the announcement. "Honest taxpayers and gambling industry personnel who ... follow the law suffer from those who promote illegal online behavior."
Hanaway has been aggressive in going after online-gambling operations -- some of which are publicly traded in London -- for several years. A spokesman declined to say if action had been taken against any other Internet companies, hundreds of which have sold advertising to online betting operators over the last decade.
Earlier in 2007, she put the bag on Gary Kaplan, founder of BetonSports.com, who was detained by Dominican authorities in March and handed over to the United States. His arrest -- and an earlier one of BetonSports Chief Executive David Carruthers -- stem from grand-jury indictments for racketeering, conspiracy and fraud, arising from the operation of Costa Rica-based betting sites.
Kaplan alone faces 20 felony charges including racketeer-influenced and corrupt-organizations conspiracy and tax evasion. He is jailed without bond, while Carruthers is out on bail but under house arrest and electronic monitoring after posting $1 million in cash.
The individuals have long maintained they have done nothing illegal, and their trials are expected to begin sometime early next year

Gambling 911 is such a whore for rumours, most of what they just posted made no sense what-so-ever.
