(CNN) -- At least 18 people have been shot at Northern Illinois University outside Chicago, CNN affiliates are reporting.
The University has ordered its student body to seek shelter and canceled classes Thursday.
"Its has been confirmed that there has been a shooting on campus and several people have been taken away by ambulance," the school said in a posting on its DeKalb campus Web site. "All classes are canceled on the DeKalb campus. People are urged not to come to campus.

The gunman who opened fire in a lecture hall is dead, the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting.
The lecture hall is Cole Hall, reports say. The shooting occured shortly after 3 p.m. ET.

Guns are banned on most college campuses anyway, so the perp is already violating a gun ban. He wouldn't violate a state/federal ban too?
Realistic gun control, IMHO, would be requiring biometric firing locks on all hand guns. But that's going to promote gun alternatives (bombs) in this case.
If I was in college these days, I would very seriously consider attending class armed.
Maybe we should stop spending billions each day in Iraq and place armed security in each lecture hall or at least armed security with metal detectors at the building doors. I never thought I'd say such as thing, but modern kids have proven to me that they simply will not stop randomly shooting each other.

Are you kidding me. Deaths by guns in Britain, Canada, and the rest of the developed world are much lower than in the United States. I don't see some rush towards "gun alternatives", whatever the hell that even means.
Everytime I see a horrible event like this shooting it makes me sick. Yes, gun control wont entirely prevent these events from happening. But gun control coupled to improved systems to recognize and deal with people who are at a risk to erupt in an orgy of violence can make a difference.
In my opinion, the saddest part of the whole thing is the failure of American citizens and lawmakers to recognize that the Constitution is a dynamic document. Who knows, maybe things that were good ideas in the 1700's aren't good ideas anymore??
