What's the reason we don't see 300 strikeout seasons anymore?

Randy Johnson did it routinely back in the day. When's the last 300 strikeout year anyway?

Teams used to not ALWAYS put their closer in the 9th inning of the game like they do now. Also teams have 8th inning setup men now as well.

Aside from Nolan Ryan, Steve Carlton and JR Richard, I dont remember too many guys who routinely had 300 strikeout years

Pitchers make too much money now to risk "overexerting" themselves on any one season.

Randy Johnson 334 in 2002 ( the final year of 4 consecutive 300+ K seasons for the big Unit)

2002 334k
2001 372 ( 3rd highest all time )
2000 347
1999 364

The last American leaguer to do it was Pedro with Boston in 1999 and before that, ironically Randy Johnson had 308 in 1993.

*Interesting Sidenote stat ---Despite two separate 20 strikeout games and 7 Cy Young awards, Roger Clemens has never had a 300+ strikeout season. His high was 291 back in 1988 ( pre roids )

Pitch count...something that never existed prior to 1990 or so, and almost any pitcher worth his salt never worked on any significant kind of pitch count.

Drug testing caught up with the pitchers. In my back yard out in the desert I can throw a 90mph fastball after snorting some good crystal meth; I dont have to worry about testing. If it wasnt for testing I'd be in the majors... probably testifying in congress but hey I'd still be a big leaguer.

The main reason is pitchers rarely pitch over 220IP any more. When Bob Feller broke the SO record in 46 he pitched 371 innings and had 348 strikeouts.
