I know I should go to a doctor to find out for sure, but I would like to avoid a doctors visit if possible.

I fell this morning while wresting with a friend and landed on my hand (palm down). The fall was absorbed by my arm. 5 hours later, there is a moderate amount of pain in my forearm from my wrist to elbow ( mostly near the elbow ). Amazingly, I have never broken a bone in my body so I don't know what a broken bone feels like. If I have a broken arm, will the pain be severe? Will it be localized? When I move my arm, the pain does not increase.

When I squeeze my arm, the pain does not increase.

What is the longest I can wait before I should see a doctor?

It is not broken. You strained or sprained a muscle. Ice it down and rest it for a few days and you should be fine.

Probably not a broken bone. The pain from broken bones tends to hit you right away, and you usually feel nauseous. Sprains and tears swell up over the first 48 hours, sounds like you have a sprain or worse, but not a broken bone.

Pop a couple Aleve and wait it out 48-72 hours, and see how its feeling then. Even if it is broken, doctor is going to have to wait til swelling goes down to put a cast on it.

I broke my hand a couple years ago in college, student health saw me for free, gave me an order of 20 prescription pills which i picked up at pharmacy for 67 cents total (Blue Cross Blue Shield Health Insurance). Took the 20 pills down to the frat house and sold em for $5 a pop.

Doubt it is broken, but it could be. Just do not know what your pain tolerance is. Most people who break a bone can not take the pain and go to the doctor/hospital right away. I have broken many bones in my life now and know when one is broken and when it is not from the sensation of the pain.

Speaking of... I have a secondary question.

Drunk and fuckin around with friends I got thrown into the garage somehow face first. I put out my hand to block the impact and my thumb lands funny. At first I thought I had broken it because I've broken my thumbs twice each playing sports and the feeling was the same. However, it never got all fat and blue like previous times so I figured maybe it was a sprain or a dislocation. My buddy thought dislocation and tried to pop it back in but it wasn't dislocated and just hurt like a bitch. Anyway, this was about 3 months ago or more and the pain slowly went away but it still hurts when I bend it and something is definitely wrong. It doesn't have the strength it used to and the pain seems to be coming from the knuckle part of my thumb. Any info here? Not sure if I did something to the ligaments or such... or if I might have broken the knuckle part of the thumb and maybe it doesn't puff up like the actual thumb does. Anyway, some advice would be nice. It's not unbearable pain or anything but it's definitely not right.

I took 2 advil and the pain is getting worse and is extending to my hand/thumb.

Is it possible to get a bone bruise without the bone being hit directly? I landed on my hand.

I will wait 48 hours and then make another decision.

Ever since you quit gambling you have become soft. Reload at a book and the pain will go away

I've had the same thing a couple of times. About 5 years ago I hurt my middle finger playing basketball when I threw a pass that was blocked back into my hand. Hurt like hell, almost passed out. Felt broken but never got swollen or anything. Never did anything about it, bothered me for months fairly bad. To this day, fuckin' thing will bother me if I have to carry something really heavy with my fingers on that hand. Not terrible pain, just gets really sore with slight pain. Five years ago......Then about a month ago jammed like four fingers on same hand playing basketball again, didn't think it was too bad, pain went away in about a day except one finger which I still have pain in the knuckle area if I put some pressure on it while bending it.

So, not sure what to tell you, except, it's probably something small that you could get fixed or something that will slowly go away over time but may still be noticeable years down the line.

Best first line of a post I've seen in a long time

You probably just sprained it. I've done it repeatedly & it sucks....takes a long time to go away, that's for sure.

A buddy of mine from the bar was telling me how he's had this neck injury he's had from a car accident a while back.. and he get vicodin (hydrocodone).. well he calls into work (Whole Foods) and talks to his bosses about it.. tells them the vicodin isn't doing it and he's not coming to work he's gonna go see the doctor for something different

both bosses (team leader and atl) told him.. alright well if you get any good shit let me know...

happened to me 17 years ago...fell over backwards and extended my arm to break my fall..cracked my bone from elbow to wrist...worst pain i have ever endured in my life...even after visiting emergency room and getting drugs that made me see animals running across floor, the pain was still not stopped...had to go thru therapy for 6 weeks...settled with workers comp for 15k and wished to this day i never would have...got what i think is arthritis in my arm and the pain on some days is unbearable..

if you are not feeling excruciating pain you probably did not crack your bone

Anyone else find it strange two grown men were wrestling this morning? Unless of course you are training for the Olympics, then I guess I should say Good Luck in Beijing

It could be lupus.

Sounds like cystic fibrosis to me.

OP, see a doctor soon. Pain shouldn't be spreading to your hand and thumb like that. Ask for an MRI and a CAT Scan.
