Another fighter from that era who deserves to be mentioned: Wilfred Benitez.
Another fighter of note from that era was the ill fated Wilfred Benetiz.
Born in Puerto Rico, Benitez was a polished fighter in his mid teens.
He had memorable fights against the likes of:
Carlos Palomino
Antonio Cervantes
Roberto Duran
Harold Weston
Carlos Santos
Maurice Hope (famous knockout by Benitez)
Sugar Ray Leonard (great fight)
Thomas Hearns (both fighters knocked down)
A strange and unfortunate incident in 1987
stranded Benetiz in Argentina for a year
when his manager robbed him of not only his
entire purse from a fight but his passport also, he was never the same.
Today Benetiz has Diabetes and an incurable, degenerative brain condition many believe was caused by the blows he took in the ring against the likes of Hitman Hearns and others.
He fought 62 fights winning 53, (31 by KO), lost 8 and had 1 draw.
Benetiz was a three time world champion.
Defeated Antonio Cervantes WBA Light Welterweight Champion
6 Mar 1976 – 1977. (Stripped of title when he moved up in weight class)
Defeated Carlos Palomino WBC Welterweight Champion
14 Jan 1979 – 30 Nov 1979. (Lost title to Leonard)
Defeated Maurice Hope WBC Light Middleweight boxing champion
23 May 1981– 3 Dec 1982. (lost title to Hearns)
I saw the Leonard fight at Ceasars Palace in 1979. The ref stopped it with 6 seconds to go in round 15. Benetiz was head butted in the 6th round by Leonard which opened a cut and made the rest of the fight a defensive one for him. Hell of a fight that could have gone either way.
wil.
