LONDON - A lucky gambler has made 1 million pounds, or about $1.97 million, from a 50 pence ($1) bet, British bookmaker William Hill said Saturday.
The man, who William Hill has not identified, correctly guessed the outcome of eight horse races Friday, beating odds of two-million-to-one.
He walked into a William Hill branch in the north England town of Thirsk and placed wagers on eight horses in eight different contests in a so-called “accumulator bet,” the company said.
His first win came when a horse called “Isn’t That Lucky” won the 2:55 p.m. race at the Sandown track, southwest of London. By the time “A Dream Come True” crossed the finish line at the Wolverhampton racecourse in central England later that evening, the man had won 1 million pounds.

William Hill spokesman Graham Sharpe says the man was oblivious to his win when he came to a different William Hill branch Saturday to place more 50 pence bets. Sharpe said the man had not won any of Saturday’s wagers, losing 2.50 pounds.
“If he does it another 400,000 times we’ll have it all back,” Sharpe said.
William Hill, one of the biggest players in Britain’s gambling industry, operates more than 2,000 betting shops across the country.

he didnt even know he had won? did he have paper slips for bets like Vegas, or do they keep records in the William hill computers at the walk in shops.

I doubt 10 million would come anywhere close to bankrupting William hill btw, this is a huge PLUS for them actually, as the advertising they get from this keeps the dream alive.

That Bet would have been well and truely laid off at the 20K liability but as usual its made to sound like the Books are Good Guys. 20 Years or so ago a geezer had an accumulator going at Cheltenham where millions get bet on every race, while his money was going on a 66/1 chance by morning line prices, the Books knocked it in to 6/1 thus turning him over for 1/2 a mill.

And you Yanks have the nerve to talk about treating Books good :missingte :drink:

well, if they laid it off at 20K liability, it must have been laid off many times because, then some other book had to eat the action? so they also laid off at 20K liability and so on and so on?

£1M was the limit on the bet. His odds were 2.8million/1 meaning he should've got £1.4M.

Hill's I think pointed out they could've paid him a lowly £100k because he had a couple of horses in the bet at Nad Al Sheba. Apparently the £1M accumulator limit goes down to 100K if you include foreign races. But they decided to pay him.

Yes because it only cost them probably 80K by time things were sorted out. Absolute joke, you Yanks have never seen the panic in a betting ring on track when a big Book has a bet running up to then tell all the Papers how big hearted they are. :drink:

Forgive me, but I highly doubt they would lay off that parlay at only a 20K risk. not saying they would never lay off but 20K exposure? seems laughable to me.

There was 10m bet on the Manchester United game this afternoon. 20,000 GBP is nothing.
