Colonoscopy Prep.

The colon must be free of solid matter for the test to be performed properly. For one to three days, the patient is required to follow a low fibre or clear-fluid only diet. Examples of clear fluids are apple juice, bouillon, artificially flavored lemon-lime soda or sports drink, and of course water. It is very important that the patient remains hydrated. As orange juice, prune juice, and milk contain fibre, they are banned from the list, as are liquids dyed red, orange, purple, or brown, such as cola. However, in most cases black coffee is allowed.

The day before the colonoscopy, the patient is either given a laxative preparation (such as Bisacodyl, phospho soda, sodium picosulfate, or sodium phosphate and/or magnesium citrate) and large quantities of fluid or whole bowel irrigation is performed using a solution of polyethylene glycol and electrolytes.

The patient may be asked to skip aspirin and aspirin-like products such as salicylate, ibuprofen, and similar medications for up to ten days before the procedure to avoid the risk of bleeding if a polypectomy is performed during the procedure. A blood test may be performed before the procedure.

I had one done about two years ago without anethestic, they really don't hurt much, just uncomfortable. I was clean as a whistle - knock on wood.

I had the option of being put to sleep but refused and in all honesty it was no big deal. However I don't recommened it if you are squeamish when having medical procedure done. I am a veteran of a bunch of stuff, needles, blood, tubes, none of that stuff bothers me much.

Don't go by me though - if they offer to sedate you let them - just make sure you have someone with you to drive home. Awake you can watch the procedure on the monitor but that is really no big deal.

President Bush has had two tests done since he has been president and was knocked out both times making Dick Cheney acting president for a few hours two separate times - that IMO is scary..:drink:

Best of luck and don't worry it is not as bad as it is made out to be. The worse part is the day before living on the liquid diet.

There is absolutely NO reason to skip this procedure once you hit 50. I can't tell you how many times I've heard of people dying of colon cancer between the ages of 50-60. It literally makes me sick when I hear of someone I am acquainted with dying of this disease.

Glad to hear you guys are having it done.

After putting the procedure off for a few years, I had one about 6 months ago. They found a couple of benign polyps so I guess I can go back to eating Doritos for another few years.

The day before I drank a lot of liquids like gatorade. Some sprite. Ate some popsicles - lemon, lime not anything red. I got to drink two bottles of magnesium citrate - make sure you get them nice and cold as they are much more tolerable.

Overall it's not that bad. Good luck!!
