Going to try and find rotation information.

Keep in mind most spring training games at this time last year, the main hitters played most of the game unless they were injured. Look for 3 at-bats from most healthy starters.

Starting pitchers usually went 3 innings at most, and then a guy battling for a rotation spot would come in and pitch a few more, with relievers doing an inning or two each after that.

Royals and Rangers:

Lefty John Bale is scheduled to start and pitch two innings. Plans also call for Luke Hochevar and Brian Lawrence to pitch two innings apiece before Ron Mahay, Yasuhiko Yabuta and Carlos Rosa each work one inning.

The Rangers switched starters Tuesday by scratching right-hander Brandon McCarthy because of a sore elbow. Lefty A.J. Murray will start instead.

"I'm just going to try to be consistent, work on getting the ball down and throw strikes," Chico said. "Walks are what I'm really trying to (cut down) right now."

"I'm going to go in there looking at it as I've got to work on some things, but also try to compete," Chico said.

Also on a side note, Nick Johnson is healthy and will likely play.

Good info on Reds' lineup and Affeldt:

SARASOTA, Fla. - Dusty Baker has the lineup cards, but he hasn't begun filling them out.

"It's a little early to do that," he said. "I got lineup cards today for the intra-squad game. It usually comes to you in the night - 'this guy would be here, if this guy isn't playing I'd have this guy here.' Different scenarios. Who can run. We don't have a lot of speed. I think we could use some more speed to tell you the truth."

The big question: Who hits leadoff? Norris Hopper or Ryan Freel will when they start.

If they don't?

"I hope one or the other would be in the game," Baker said. "That's my hope. I don't know many teams that have three (leadoff guys)."

That would not seem to bode well for prospect Jay Bruce, 20, who's competing with Freel and Hopper for the center field job.

Bruce will need a good spring to win the job. If he does, the Reds are going to have to find a leadoff man among the other starters.

Baker said the lineup won't surprise fans.

"It probably won't be a whole lot different than last year," he said. "Without Josh Hamilton, it will be different."

A lot of the attention is on who is going to lead off, but Baker is also giving careful consideration to who hits behind the leadoff guy.

"It's probably equally important who the second hitter's going to be," Baker said. "That's a big, big spot. It's a smart spot, a contact spot, a move-the-ball-around spot, an unselfish spot. It's probably one of the more (important) spots in the lineup."

Baker said Alex Gonzalez, Jeff Keppinger and Scott Hatteberg are candidates to hit second.

"Depends who's playing; you don't want it to be a power guy," he said. "Gonzalez, Keppinger, Hatteberg. You'd like a little more speed."

Baker said Brandon Phillips probably will hit cleanup again - behind Ken Griffey Jr. and in front of Adam Dunn.

"Brandon will probably hit third someday," Baker said. "But, right now, I need to him break up (left-handed hitters) Junior and Dunn."

So the lineup will look something like this:

Freel/Hopper CF

Hatteberg/Joey Votto 1B

Griffey RF

Phillips 2B

Dunn LF

Edwin Encarnacion 3B

Gonzalez SS

David Ross C

OPENER: Left-hander Jeremy Affeldt said he'll enjoy starting the spring opener Wednesday against the Phillies in Clearwater.

"It'll be fun," he said. "I'll go out there and compete."

The Reds are trying to get Affeldt back to starting after mostly relieving the last two years. The key to that is regaining his third pitch, the changeup.

"It's coming along," he said. "It's not there yet. I found a grip that I think will work. It's a work in progress."

Just a note... Affeldt is saying his changeup isn't there, which leaves him with two pitches. Phillies should be able to hit him.

I think Bonderman is starting for Detroit, but that is far from 100%.

Royals' lineup info:

Billy Butler will play first base and Alex Gordon will bat fifth, not seventh, when the Royals open their Cactus League schedule Wednesday afternoon against the Texas Rangers at Surprise Stadium. The Royals posted their lineup before Tuesday’s workout. It included no real surprises, although second baseman Mark Grudzielanek and outfielder Jose Guillen aren’t scheduled to play – and probably won’t play before March 8.

“They’re veteran guys,” manager Trey Hillman said, “and their bodies know how to get ready. I want them fresh for the start of the season.”

Butler gets the nod at first base over Ryan Shealy and Ross Gload. Butler’s ability to play first is one of the key questions facing the Royals as they work through spring training.

“We need to find out some things,” Hillman said. “I’d love to win these ballgames from a standpoint of getting that winning feeling going into the season. But ultimately, the primary objective is answering questions and getting guys ready to play the season.”

Hillman has often cited Gordon as a potential No. 7 hitter but chose to have him bat fifth in the spring opener.

The lineup: CF David DeJesus, 2B Esteban German, LF Mark Teahen, DH Shealy, 3B Gordon, 1B Butler, RF Shane Costa, C John Buck and SS Tony Peña.

Hillman’s lineup card also listed likely substitutes for each starter: Mitch Maier in center, Alberto Callaspo at second, Justin Huber in left, Jason Smith at third, Mike Stodolka at first, Damon Hollins in left, Miguel Olivo at catcher and Angel Berroa at short.

Hochevar impressive

Catcher John Buck points to Luke Hochevar when asked to pick the most impressive pitcher in camp to date.

“I knew he had good stuff,” Buck said. “That’s obvious. That’s why he’s a top prospect. But to see his stuff (this spring), to catch it and also hit off of it, the sharpness of his pitches – I don’t remember them being that sharp last year.

“He’s getting a lot of reactions from hitters, like double looks. That tells you he’s got some sharp stuff right now.”

Hochevar is scheduled to pitch two innings Wednesday against the Rangers in the spring opener at Surprise Stadium.
