Opened Spring Training yesterday with the traditional game against the U.

Today the real grapefruit league started against the Nationals.

Scotty Olsen got the ball and looked pretty good.

Mike Jacobs took one yard. Would be nice to see a consistent and healthy year from him at first.

Other notable was Gaby Hernandez got some work on the mound and showed why he's considered one of our better prospects.

He's a complete head case, but hopefully he'll mature at some point as he does have the tools to be a stud.

Maybin is probably best served in triple-A for a year. My boy de Aza continues to be a stud every day, hope he stays healthy.

3rd base is completely up for grabs and Castillo went oh-fer today.

I'm a diehard Fish fan and even though I'm realistic about our outlook this year, love what we are building.

Also, hopefully if I (and othe Marlins fans) can keep up with this thread throughout the year we will see a few good betting opportunities in spots.

Not a fan of the individual forums and their hyperbole and toutisms, so hopefully others will take this tact to provide good info instead of chest-thumping.

Sergio Mitre will start tomorrow against the O's. Never been a big fan of him and feel any contribution would be welcome.

Anxious to see how Volstad and Sinkbeil do in spring training as they look to be the next in line for starting spots down the road.

Yes, he has tools but is inconsistent and has had health issues.

FWIW, Fish were up 3-2 going into 9th and some guy named Gwyn (apparently he was an Angel farmhand) blew the save.

<!--sphereit start-->FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- After facing three batters in his Grapefruit League debut on Thursday, Marlins right-hander Sergio Mitre was lifted because of right elbow discomfort.

Projected to be one of Florida's top three starters, Mitre was removed following a five-pitch walk to Baltimore's Nick Markakis.
As Markakis was trotting to first base, pitching coach Mark Wiley was accompanied by team trainer Sean Cunningham and manager Fredi Gonzalez to the mound. Daniel Barone was quickly called upon to relieve Mitre, who didn't retire any of the three batters he faced.
"I just couldn't get loose," said Mitre, whose fastball was clocked in the 88-89 mph range on Thursday. "I was real stiff. I couldn't loosen up. I couldn't follow through on my pitches.
"I wouldn't say there was pain. It was stiff, real stiff. ... I went through my [pregame] bullpen just fine. It came out of nowhere."
Mitre said he will get the elbow examined by physicians on Friday, when he will undergo tests. He did not know if he would need an MRI, although that is certainly possible.
"I don't know yet," he said. "We'll go to the field tomorrow, ice and then go from there."
The 27-year-old said he felt agitation on a changeup he threw two pitches before walking Markakis.
"We'll see where he is," Gonzalez said. "We'll have a doctor take a look at it in another day or two, and we'll get a better read on it."
Mitre comes off a 2007 season in which he finished 5-8 with a 4.65 ERA in 27 starts. He also logged a personal-high 149 innings.
Mitre struggled with his command at Fort Lauderdale Stadium. He walked Brian Roberts, the first batter he faced. After Roberts stole second and third, Melvin Mora reached on an error by Jorge Cantu, scoring Roberts.

"There was obviously something going on," Wiley said. "I'm glad he told us pretty quick."
Walking Markakis ended Mitre's afternoon after 15 pitches.
In 2007, Mitre went on the disabled list with a blister. He also pitched through a pulled hamstring. At the end of the season, he was shut down for the final few weeks from what appeared to be fatigue. Staying healthy has been an annual struggle for the right-hander.
"I want to pitch," Mitre said. "If I have to be shut down for a little while, so be it.
"It's disappointing. This is something I wasn't expecting at all. This came out of nowhere. We'll see what happens tomorrow and we'll deal with it." Joe Frisaro is a reporter for MLB.com. This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs.

My boy de Aza with a grand slam today.

Maybin looked much better and Cantu took the lead at third base.

Good to see Pinto on the mound as well as Sinkbeil and Andrew Miller.

GD,

I know it's early but how much playing time to you think McPherson gets this year? Does he win the starting job and keep it at any time or is the position platooned all year?

daheavy,
Dallas is already having some minor health problems. Not a good sign and he can't afford to get off to a late start with the battle going on.

This is just my personal opinion, but I think they will try and option him to the minors and either call him up if can stay healthy and hit or an injury hits. I think either Cantu or Castillo wins the battle and they supplement with Amezaga from time to time. The lose likely gets designated and traded or released.

Right now Cantu has the inside track based on just the first few days, but I think Castillo has the major league contract.

In all honesty, I'd love to see McPherson win the spot and live up to his potential but right now don't see that happening. Hopefully, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Top outfield prospect Cameron Maybin left Friday's exhibition game with a pulled hamstring and will be out of action for a week or more to rest it.

Where should we bat Hanley?

DO you think we should keep Hanley at the top or move him to more of a run producing spot like #3?
Without Cabrera, we dont have any proven player to drive in runs but I think the additional 40-50 at bats Hanley would get in the leadoff spot is the reason he should hit there. Thoughts...

Right now there is no proven leadoff hitter. If we had someone to step up and take that role, I'd bat Hanley 3rd. Until Maybin is ready though I think they will hesitate to put faith in De Aza as a leadoff hitter.
So to answer your question, I'm leaning to Hanley at least starting the year off at leadoff.

Dallas McPherson will return tomorrow.
Cantu had two more hits today though as he is widening his lead in the battle for 3rd.

Scotty O pitched well today, and Andrew Miller will be making his first ST start tomorrow.

In the files of "I did not know that", erstwhile prospect Tagg Bozied is in Fish camp and got the start at first today.

Remember the game well Budworth. Had a t-shirt from the inaugural series.
Charlie Hough threw a ball about four feet outside to Brett Butler to lead off the game and the ump rang him up looking. The crowd went nuts.

I called in on a monday in 1997 before the marlins had beat the braves for world series tickets, couldnt get thru. Called again on tuesday, still before the marlins had beat the braves, game 6 I think was that night at Atlanta Kevin Brown vs Glavine or Madux or Smoltz I dont remember. Marlins won that night to advance to the world series.

But I called before the game, I wanted world series game 6 tickets but they were all sold out. Games 1 &2 were long gone. All I could get was upper deck left field seats for game 7. So me and my dad as it turns out saw the Marlins win the World Series.
