One-man band Jimmy Limo plays at the Nevada Palace on the casino’s next-to-last day of business Thursday. Limo has been playing a four-hour set at the Palace five days a week for eight years. “I’ve got nothing for March as of now,” he said. He’s still waiting to hear if he’ll play at the Eastside Cannery hotel, being built on the site.

Tomorrow’s Las Vegas is rising dramatically where Harmon Avenue runs into the Strip at CityCenter, the $8 billion high-rise project that defines a new and daring direction for this town.
Yesterday’s Las Vegas is crumbling where Harmon Avenue crosses Boulder Highway on the east side of town, where Nevada Palace closes its doors at 8 tonight.
If you didn’t know that, or if you wonder whether you should care, no wonder. It was a dive the day it opened, and has been slipping ever since, so its passing isn’t noteworthy for many people.
In a neighborhood distinguished by its weekly-rate motels and pawn shops, the Palace — with all of 481 slot machines — will be missed for its two-for-one lasagna special and coin-in-coin-out slots.
Of course it will be replaced, because that is the equilibrium of development. The Eastside Cannery hotel, a sister of the Cannery in North Las Vegas, is under construction on the site.
This would be big news in other cities — the replacement of a mom-and-pop business with a $250 million, 16-story hotel.
But in Las Vegas, progress is measured on a much larger scale. Just drive down Harmon Avenue and gape at CityCenter.
On this end of Harmon Avenue, progress is marked by a blood drive to commemorate the closing of Nevada Palace. Donors will get a free meal at the new place after it opens this summer.
No implosion here. A front-loader will knock over the already rubber-legged building.
It’s going to kill Shari Beza. She’s been serving cocktails and coffee at Nevada Palace for a quarter-century. She plans on getting all dolled up for work tonight. She’s going to apply waterproof mascara.
“I can’t drive down Boulder Highway and not see this place here,” she said. “It will break my heart.”
On Thursday, the place had long been emptied of table games ($200 limit). About the only things left in the gift shop were a few packs of GPC cigarettes. Just off the casino floor, midday diners at Formica tables were enjoying the daily specials.
The new building will have a 65,000-square-foot casino and six restaurants, including one on the top floor. Just like on the Strip.
That’s a sure sign of progress on this end of Harmon Avenue.

I'm sure Kermit will shed a few tears. Certainly a place that is well-worn.

The Cannery East will be opened on the site in late summer to take NP's place.

Spent many, many days/nights in this little ballpark........having lived just a hop, skip, and jump from it for many of my years in Vegas.

Mermories I will have............

1. The steaks in the coffee shop.....downright good and a bargain to boot.

2. The nightly sports trivia contests in the pit, where on more than a few occassions I was fortunate to come away a winner and recieve a free comped dinner for two.

3. The tiny Leroy Sportsbook located just inside the front entrance, where sometimes it was tough to get a bet in as usually some guy was rattling off no less than 10 ten teamers in front of me.

4. The video poker promotions.........and the short lived $1 fullpay dueces wild machines.

5. The $1 bottles at the bar, where more times than not one was asked for company by a 60+ year old hooker.

Honestly, it is very sad to see this place coming to an end, as I will always have fond memories of the joint.

Oh well, the LONGHORN across the street is still going strong i hope...............and that place even has more fun filled memories than the Nevada Palace. If you never have been to the Longhorn, make a point to stop in and enjoy the lounge act at the bar on a nightly basis.....great fun.

I worked for Leroys for a short time and worked at the little book in there on a couple occasions. Constant fear of being robbed in there and it did get robbed on several occasions. What a horrible place for the book you just walk right in off of the parking lot. Lots of shady characters walking Boulder Highway.

Funny you mention the Longhorn Fish. On my trip there during football season last November, naturally all the Gaming Todays were gone from Sam's Town since I arrived on a Thursday, so I was traveling down Boulder Hwy and saw that joint and decided to take a peek inside to see if by some luck they had some left. Couldn't believe how crowded it was in there but couldn't find any GT's until I looked in the gift shop. There they were. My only trip to the Longhorn and probably my last.

Oh cmon, great place.

Amazing the millions and millions of tourists(and locals for that matter) that never get around and see all that Vegas has to offer.

Very proud to say that upon moving from Vegas in 2002 that I had been in every casino in the entire valley and 99% of the bars/tavarns in the entire city also.........sad to say, but this has probably been my greatest achievement in my lifetime to date.

luckily the Poker Palace is still open

For a year or two, was one of their regulars in the pokerroom, as they had some kind of promo for total hours played........what a grind.

Other than that, the place never had much to offer.

Fish where was
this joint located ?

The Poker Palace is on the extreme end of LV BLVD SOUTH(the Strip) about 4 miles north of the downtown area.

Jerrys Nugget and the Opera House are located in the nearby vicinity also........but the Poker Palace is the furthest from downtown.

Yes I was there last night for their closing. This place really wasn't my cup of tea but it was the favorite spot for my wife and her Mom to spend many hours at their old fashioned Keno machines and their $ .25 9/6 JB video poker coin in /coin out ! Yes I mean every single winning hand the quarters would fall out of the machines ! This place was really old school. This is the same place my wife hit 9/9 on New Years Eve a few months ago.2 years ago they had a video poker machine that I hit upon by accident as I was killing time as my wife was playing Keno there. The machine was obviously mechanically defected as it kept giving me 4 Kings and 4 Aces at a very positive rate. They also had this promotion going where they were giving out really nice jackets for every so many points earned on certain nights. I only went there on those nights and won quite a few jackets until they woke up one day and fixed the faulty machine ! We have a freeby box where We toss all our unwanted free gifts the Casinos give away and when company comes to visit, They have a ball gathering up all the precious souvenirs ! OK ... it's really mostly a bunch of junk but nobody cares until my quests arrive home and everyone looks at them like .. Why did you drag that junk home for ?
Anyway I just had to go last night as there were too many memories there to resist. The place is less than 2 miles from our house. It was a really weird evening as about 8:15 PM, they had their employees dropping by every video poker and slot reel and telling us that they would be closing about 45 minutes and that We would be smart to cash out our credits now because if We waited until 9 pm when they closed and the machines were empty of coins that We might have a long wait to get our coins as there were only so many employees to refill the coins. I started with 400 coins and since they have no 100 % payback except the bank of 9/6 coin in/coin out quarters machines which I hated to play because your hands would be all black handling the filthy Quarters a zillion times, I decided to continue playing figuring I would surely be broke by the time they closed. However for whatever reason I couldn't seem to get rid of my quarters and so at closing time I still had 700 quarters in my machine. I pushed the cash out buttom and held my breath as the coins very slowly started falling into my tray. I guess it was my lucky evening as somehow all 700 coins were in this old machine as I think I would have simply walked away rather than wait for an employee to refill my machine. The place was packed more than I have ever seen the place ! In many ways I hated this place but a lot of good times could also be remembered. For my wife and her mom it was a very sad day !

How could you not mention the Silver Nugget? First time I was ever there with my GF, we sat down at the bar to play video poker. After playing for a few minutes, the head of security and one of the owners came up to us and started asking us questions like what were we doing there. When we told them that we stopped by because we were watching her brother in laws double wide while he was away for the weekend. Figured out later on that they thought she was a hooker and I was her pimp and we were looking for business. Guess we were too dressed up for the place.
