Deadly shootings inside Fla. fast-food restaurant
Original posting at 1:18 p.m. ET: Several people were shot today at a Wendy's restaurant in West Palm Beach, Fla., local media report.
WPTV-TV says two people were killed -- included the gunman -- and three others were wounded.
The gunman committed suicide, according to The Palm Beach Post.
Officials tell WPBF-TV that an off-duty police officer was in the restaurant at the time of the incident.
Update at 1:26 p.m. ET: Palm Beach County sheriff's spokeswoman Teri Barbera tells the Associated Press that three people are in critical condition.
Update at 2:51 p.m. ET:The Palm Beach Post spoke with some of the people who were in the restaurant when the man started shooting. "A witness saw the shooter enter the restaurant bathroom. As soon as he came out he pulled out what looked like a 9mm handgun," the paper says. "He shot the deceased victim at near point-blank range then turned to the left and started shooting more rounds."
WPBF-TV says the shooter was wearing a suit.
''There was no robbery attempt, no demands, no way to predict he was going to do this,'' Paul Miller, a spokesman for the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, tells The Miami Herald. ''It was random,'' Miller adds.
Update at 4:08 p.m. ET: The first victim was a Palm Beach County sheriff's lieutenant who was on lunch break from a nearby training class, a sheriff's department official just said on a televised news confrence. (The official was not identified on MSNBC, which we monitored).
The victim was not wearing his uniform when he was shot and had met his wife and a child at the restaurant for lunch, the official said. The victim had left the restaurant when he realized he had not received the toy that came with the child's meal -- and he was shot when he returned, the official said.
