I woke up this morning at 4 am and turned on CNN Headline News. And I thought I was viewing the same thing I saw a week ago. AN OVERTURNED SCHOOL BUS!!! If memory serves right, this just happened about a week ago. In that incident I believe that 4 or 5 kids died! I don't think that, fortunately, no one died in this crash.

So what I need explained to me is WHY DON'T SCHOOL BUSES HAVE SEAT BELTS?

If I'm not mistaken, the Government made seat belts mandatory on passenger cars in the late 60's or early 70's and trucks were to follow. But here we are in the 21st century and there is no such ruling for school buses. How can this be? And how come there has not been a public outcry for this to become mandatory on school buses?

Now I don't have any children in school any longer and they're grown and on their own, but my daughter now has a child who will eventually go to school, and I don't even know if she will be bussed or not, and even if she is, it's a long time coming. But I feel concerned for the children all over the USA that are traveling NOW in school buses that DON'T have seat belts.

Now we've all seen videos of the fights that have occurred on school buses where kids are getting beaten up, and even one recently where the school bus driver was even involved in a fight! BUT, how can they justify having cameras on the buses that must cost plenty, when they don't have the children securely fastened to their seats in case of an accident? Does this make sense to you? Is the school bus lobby in Washington so strong that they can avoid putting seat belts on these vehicles for the last 35 years or so?

I just wonder what kind of horrific accident is going to have to happen in order to get seat belts installed on school buses. Maybe these recent accidents will wake some people up and cause some sort of outcry to have these seat belts installed. I guess time will tell!

Let me ask you a couple of questions, if I may. What exactly is the problem for which adding seat belts to school buses is the solution? Did you ever ride a school bus?

In my area they have difficulty filling jobs for school bus drivers. It doesn't pay much and they get yelled at by everyone. A thankless and stressful job to say the least. Try adding more responsibility to the bus driver by requiring seat belts be used at all times. I wouldn't wish that job on my worst enemy.

You could argue that bus drivers should be payed more, I guess. I would argue the whole busing system be dismantled and done away with.
