A bicycle that is left outside may develop some surface rust. To remove rust from a bike, it's easiest to use a rust removal product. A rust remover cuts down on the time it takes to remove bicycle rust, and it's safe if used properly. Your bike can look like new in no time.

Step 1:
Purchase a bottle of rust remover. There are lots of different brands available at home improvement stores, discount stores and supermarkets. You can also buy one online at The Rust Store (see Resources below).

Step 2:
Remove any loose rust and dirt from the bicycle's surface by scraping. Then apply a small amount of the rust remover to an inconspicuous place on the bicycle to check if it works properly.

Step 3:
Immerse the rusty part of the bike in a plastic bucket or tub filled with the rust remover if you can. If you can't immerse the rusted area, then brush the rust remover on the rusty surface liberally.

Step 4:
Leave the rust remover on the bike for as long as directed on the product label. The amount of time it takes to remove the rust also depends on how rusty the bicycle is to begin with.

Step 5:
Rinse the rust remover off the bicycle with fresh water. You may need to use a sponge to remove any flakes of rust that remain.

Step 6:
Repeat the process as necessary. Heavily rusted areas of the bike may require additional applications to remove the rust fully.

Step 7:
Protect the bicycle's surface with a rust prevention product once dry.
